Google, Camden Council and Camden Learning have launched the London AI Campus, with the Prime Minister stating his support for the ground-breaking initiative to improve digital skills in the UK
A new era of digital education has dawned with the opening of the London AI Campus, a pioneering initiative by Google, Camden Council, and Camden Learning, designed to elevate AI education and digital skills among young people in the UK.
Located in the heart of Somers Town, the campus houses a two-year pilot program aimed at sixth-form students across Camden. The program provides cutting-edge resources, mentoring from Google DeepMind, and real-world AI projects addressing global challenges in areas such as health, social sciences, and the arts.
The initiative’s inaugural cohort of 32 students exemplifies Camden’s diversity, with priority given to applicants from underrepresented backgrounds, including those eligible for Free School Meals. Beyond the pilot, the campus will expand in mid-2025 to offer out-of-school learning opportunities, empowering a wider student body to engage with foundational AI and digital skills.
In tandem with the student-focused initiatives, the campus will serve as a hub for upskilling teachers through the Experience AI program. Co-developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind, the program provides free training and resources to help educators inspire and engage students in the field of AI.
The initiative is further bolstered by a £865,000 grant from Google.org, which will fund partnerships with Parent Zone to extend AI training to schools nationwide. By 2026, the program aims to equip over 250,000 UK students with foundational AI knowledge.
Sir Keir Starmer, MP for Holborn and St Pancras, hailed the campus as a landmark for London, stating: “AI holds transformative potential for our lives, from improving healthcare to driving economic growth. Camden’s unique blend of tech, academia, and creative industries creates an unparalleled environment for this initiative. To young people here, I say: seize this opportunity; AI is the future, and we’ll be with you every step of the way.”
Camden Council Leader Councillor Richard Olszewski emphasized the borough’s commitment to fostering diverse talent: “This partnership empowers young people from all backgrounds to thrive in STEM and creative industries, driving innovation and economic growth in Camden and beyond.”
Debbie Weinstein, Managing Director for Google UK and Ireland, remarked: “The AI Campus represents Google’s vision of making AI opportunities accessible to all, paving the way for the UK to unlock AI’s £400bn economic potential.”
Philip Colligan, CEO of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, added: “Through Experience AI and this campus, we aim to advance AI literacy, ensuring that over 250,000 young people understand the technologies shaping their future by 2026.”
With the London AI Campus as its cornerstone, Google continues to lead efforts in democratizing AI education. By fostering innovation and inclusivity, the initiative ensures that young people, regardless of background, can contribute to the burgeoning AI economy and shape a better future for all.
