Council meets with Downhills Park community over safety

Haringey Council and Downhills Park community work together to enhance safety and park standards.

Haringey Council has taken further steps to enhance safety in Downhills Park, following a meeting with the local Friends group to discuss ongoing concerns related to vandalism and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the park’s children’s playground.

The meeting, held this afternoon, provided an opportunity for Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Emily Arkell, to reassure local residents and park users about the strong measures being implemented to address the recent incidents. It also allowed for closer collaboration between the council and the community to tackle any remaining issues, in line with the Haringey Deal.

Cllr Arkell was joined by officers from the council’s Parks team, as well as the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, Cllr Sarah Williams, whose West Green ward includes Downhills Park.

Haringey Council met with local residents to discuss safety measures in Downhills Park, ensuring that anti-social behaviour incidents are addressed and future improvements are made.

Cllr Arkell commented, “It was a real pleasure for Cllr Williams and I to meet representatives of the local community in Downhills Park today and discuss with them the latest developments in the park as well as our future plans for it.”

She continued, “It was a positive meeting, and I hope they came away reassured that we take these incidents very seriously and are continuing to do everything in our power to prevent any prospective recurrence going forward. The public health, safety and welfare of our park users remains very important to us.”

The council has been working closely with the police, who are investigating the incidents after a man was arrested and released on bail earlier this month. The council also assured that efforts to maintain and improve the park’s safety and cleanliness will continue.

“We are supporting the police with their ongoing investigation into this matter. Our parks and green, open spaces are a real source of pride to us at Haringey, and our Parks team work tirelessly to maintain them to the highest standards,” said Cllr Arkell.

In December, Haringey Council announced a series of measures to tackle anti-social behaviour in Downhills Park, following the incidents that have raised concerns among residents.

In a statement issued by Cllr Emily Arkell, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, the council expressed dismay over the events taking place in the park and reassured the public that they are taking immediate action to address the issue.

“The public health, safety and welfare of our park users is very important, and we are doing everything we can to catch the perpetrator of this disgusting and irresponsible conduct,” said Cllr Arkell.

To combat the problem, the council is working closely with local police to implement strong measures. Police patrols in the park have been increased, and council staff are now checking all play equipment each morning, ensuring it is cleaned and sanitised if an incident occurs.

“We are proud of our green, open spaces and are determined to maintain them to the best possible standards,” Cllr Arkell added, reinforcing the council’s commitment to keeping the park a safe and welcoming space for all users.
