The sequel will see the return of the talented team behind the original movie, including Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, who will both direct Coco 2
Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 2017 film Coco is currently in development at Pixar Animation Studios. During the company’s annual shareholder meeting, Iger revealed that Coco 2 is still in the “initial stages,” though he assured fans it would be filled with the same humor, heart, and adventure that made the original a global hit.
“I can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger said, offering a glimpse of excitement surrounding the sequel.
The original Coco was a critical and commercial success, winning two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me. The film follows 12-year-old Miguel, whose dream of becoming a musician conflicts with his family’s longstanding ban on music. His journey leads him to the Land of the Dead, where he uncovers the truth about his family’s history and the roots of their ban.
The sequel will see the return of the talented team behind the original movie, including Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, who will both direct Coco 2. Mark Nielsen, who produced the first film, will also return as producer for the new installment.
The original Coco featured a star-studded cast, with Anthony Gonzalez voicing Miguel and Gael García Bernal playing Héctor, Miguel’s great-great-grandfather in the Land of the Dead. Edward James Olmos also starred as Chicharrón, Hector’s old friend, a role that deeply moved him. Olmos recalled his emotional reaction to the script during a previous interview with Collider, saying he was overcome with emotion when reading the story.
“They [Disney] came to me and invited me to Pixar, where they literally wined and dined me at their studio, and then they told me about the story,” Olmos explained. “I remember sitting there in heaving sobs, thinking about my own grandmother, my own relatives and those that have gone already.”
The heartwarming film’s themes of family, memory, and the importance of being remembered resonated deeply with Olmos, who said, “The whole idea was achieved and attained. My character, which I was very proud of playing, is in one scene, but people who see the movie understand the depths of what we’re talking about.”
Olmos further reflected on the significance of remembering loved ones, noting, “If no one thinks about you anymore or remembers you, you disappear and vanish.” The emotional impact of Coco was personal for him, especially as he began reflecting on his own family and the stories that live on through memories.
The news of Coco 2 has sparked excitement among fans who cherish the heartfelt story and vibrant animation of the first film. While specific plot details are still under wraps, the promise of a reunion with the creative minds behind Coco is enough to keep fans eagerly anticipating more information.
As Coco continues to hold a special place in the hearts of viewers around the world, the sequel is set to bring more musical magic and emotional storytelling to the big screen. Whether it will dive deeper into Miguel’s story or introduce new characters, fans can rest assured that Coco 2 will bring the same warmth and emotional depth that made the original a timeless classic.
