Green Day is bringing their early touring days to the big screen with New Years Rev, a coming-of-age comedy following three friends on a misguided road trip to Los Angeles, where they mistakenly believe they will open for the legendary rock band at a New Year’s Eve show.
The film, inspired by Green Day’s real-life experiences, follows the misadventures of the trio—played by Ryan Foust, Kylr Coffman, and Mason Thames—as they embark on a chaotic, music-fueled journey across the country. Written and directed by Lee Kirk, the project is currently in production in Oklahoma.
Billie Joe Armstrong reflected on the band’s early days, saying: “Van days rule. You’ll drive all night on no sleep, then play a show for 10 kids in a basement 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family. It’s electric.”
The cast includes The Office stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey in undisclosed roles, alongside Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo. The film is being produced by Green Day, Process’ Tim Perell, and Pat Solitano Productions’ Stella Pulochnikov, with Live Nation Productions’ Ryan Kroft and Michael Rapino serving as executive producers.
Live Nation, known for its work on Love, Lizzo and A Star Is Born, is expanding further into film and television, including an upcoming project with Anderson .Paak. Kroft described New Years Rev as “a tribute to the magic of live music and the journey of young artists chasing a dream.”
This is not Green Day’s first foray into film. The band previously attempted a big-screen adaptation of American Idiot, following the success of its Tony-winning musical. Despite HBO giving the project a green light in 2016, Billie Joe confirmed in 2020 that it had been scrapped after years in development.
Green Day, currently preparing to headline Coachella in April, continues to blend their love for music and storytelling—this time, with a film capturing the chaos, passion, and camaraderie of life on the road.
