Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is stepping behind the camera for the first time to direct the upcoming Netflix drama Goodbye June. The 49-year-old star, best known for her iconic roles in Titanic and The Reader, will also produce and star in the film, which will feature a star-studded cast, including Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Dame Helen Mirren.
Goodbye June is described as a contemporary, fictional drama set in England, centering around a fractured group of siblings who come together in the face of unexpected challenges. Winslet’s middle child, Mia, has written the screenplay for the film, marking a personal connection to the project.
The actress, who previously expressed reluctance to direct, shared in an interview on the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast that she had been encouraged to take on a directing role by many colleagues over the years. However, it was only recently that she realized the importance of stepping into this space, feeling a responsibility to “not let down other women” by not embracing the opportunity.
Production for Goodbye June will begin soon, with no official release date yet announced. Winslet will also produce the project alongside Kate Solomon, who collaborated with her on the 2023 film Lee.
