In a recent interview with Collider, Finn discussed the possibility of more sequels, emphasizing that any new films in the series would remain “thoughtful” and “emotionally grounded.” He shared that while the horror elements are integral to the series, the key to its continued success lies in its focus on compelling, well-developed characters. “I want to make sure it stays fresh and unexpected,” Finn said, “so we’ll have to see what new directions it can go in.”
Smile 2 follows pop star Skye Riley, played by Naomi Scott, whose life unravels after a malevolent figure—shaped like her ex-partner—begins tormenting her. Finn praised Scott’s performance, calling her “the perfect storm” for the role due to her incredible talent and ability to explore extreme emotional ranges.
Finn had previously stated that he would only revisit the Smile franchise if he could continue to tell “intense and thoughtful character stories.” He emphasized the importance of emotional intimacy in the storytelling, suggesting that while the franchise could continue to explore the horror genre, it must also remain grounded in human experiences and emotions.
Made on a $28 million budget, Smile 2 grossed $69 million in the U.S. and a total of $138 million globally, confirming the franchise’s commercial success. With the series’ future still open, fans can expect the same blend of horror and heartfelt character development that has made Smile resonate with audiences.
