The BFI Fellowship acknowledges Cruise’s versatility as an actor, recognizing his roles in a wide range of films, from critically acclaimed dramas and romances to intense thrillers and high-energy action movie
Hollywood icon Tom Cruise is set to receive the British Film Institute’s (BFI) highest honor, the BFI Fellowship, at the institute’s Chair’s Dinner in London on May 12. The Fellowship is presented to individuals whose work has made an extraordinary impact on film, and Cruise’s career, spanning over four decades, fits this description perfectly.
The BFI Fellowship acknowledges Cruise’s versatility as an actor, recognizing his roles in a wide range of films, from critically acclaimed dramas and romances to intense thrillers and high-energy action movies. However, it also takes into account his significant contribution to the UK film industry. Cruise has chosen to film numerous productions in the UK, including several installments of the Mission: Impossible series, with locations spanning London, Birmingham, North Yorkshire, the Lake District, the Peak District, and beyond.
In a statement released by the BFI, Cruise expressed his deep connection with the UK and its film industry. “I am truly honoured by this acknowledgement. I’ve been making films in the UK for over 40 years and have no plans to stop,” Cruise said. “The UK is home to incredibly talented professionals—actors, directors, writers, and crews—as well as some of the most stunning locations in the world. I’m grateful for all the BFI has done to support UK filmmaking and this incredible art form we share.”
The day before the formal Fellowship presentation, the BFI will host a special event featuring Cruise, where he will interact with the public, including aspiring film students eager to break into the industry. This will offer a unique opportunity for fans and up-and-coming filmmakers to engage with the legendary actor.

Upon receiving the Fellowship, Cruise will join a prestigious list of past recipients, including cinema giants such as David Lean, Bette Davis, Akira Kurosawa, Elizabeth Taylor, Martin Scorsese, Satyajit Ray, and the most recent honorees, Tilda Swinton and Christopher Nolan.
Cruise’s career is as dynamic as his acting roles. Best known for his portrayal of Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible series, the actor continues to push the boundaries of action filmmaking. On the work front, Cruise’s next major project is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, slated for release on May 23, 2025. The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, will continue the saga of Ethan Hunt and the IMF team, following the events of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023). The upcoming film promises to bring new faces to the franchise, including Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Katy O’Brian, and Stephen Oyoung, which has generated further excitement for the highly anticipated release.

As Cruise’s remarkable career continues to evolve, the BFI Fellowship serves as a fitting recognition of his extensive contribution to the film industry and his longstanding relationship with the UK. His influence in the world of cinema, combined with his dedication to working with the finest talent and utilizing some of the most stunning locations, cements his place as one of Hollywood’s enduring stars.
