Hounslow Council has launched the “Be Air Aware” campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of air pollution, who is most at risk, and practical ways to protect health while reducing pollution in the borough.
Air pollution is linked to serious health conditions, including respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer. The campaign equips residents with tools like free airText alerts to monitor local air pollution levels and make informed choices to safeguard their health.
The initiative provides clear guidance on: understanding air pollution and its health effects; reducing exposure both indoors and outdoors; managing symptoms effectively for those with existing conditions; minimising individual contributions to air pollution.
“The Be Air Aware website is a great resource to help people to keep themselves and their children safe.”

Protecting the most vulnerable
Certain groups, such as pregnant women, the elderly, children, and individuals with chronic health conditions, are especially at risk from air pollution. Children are particularly vulnerable as their lungs are still developing, making prolonged exposure a potential lifelong concern.
Residents can access support, including peer groups for those managing respiratory conditions, and learn about resources available to mitigate risks.
What is being done?
The Council is actively working to improve air quality through initiatives like installing monitoring stations, promoting green travel, and other measures to make the borough healthier. Residents are also encouraged to do their part by adopting eco-friendly practices.
Councillor Lily Bath, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Integration, said:
“While the Council is taking great strides to reduce air pollution levels in Hounslow, it remains a serious health concern. That’s why we want everyone to be as informed as possible and understand the ways to mitigate these risks while the work to bring levels down continues.
“The Be Air Aware website is a great resource to help people keep themselves and their children safe. I’d urge everyone to visit it and get up to speed on air pollution and any risks they might face. It also has good advice on how we can all reduce our own contributions to air pollution, making Hounslow a greener, healthier borough.”
