Shakira also opened up about her complex relationship with her hair — something she calls both a symbol of identity and a source of frustration
Shakira has revealed that early in her career, she wore heavy makeup due to a “lack of confidence.” Speaking to Allure, the 48-year-old global pop icon reflected on her evolving relationship with beauty and self-image.
“Back then, when I was younger, I think I took even more time to get ready,” she said. “The lack of experience, probably, and the lack of confidence made me wear a lot more makeup and be extra concerned.”
Despite being considered a beauty icon since the early 2000s, Shakira admitted she was far from self-assured at the time. “Now, I’m a little more confident,” she shared.
Interestingly, the Hips Don’t Lie singer has long preferred doing her own makeup. “I’ve allowed a couple of makeup artists to touch my face over the years, but it doesn’t happen that often,” she noted. These days, the singer prefers a more pared-back look, even when performing on stage or appearing in music videos. “When it comes to beauty and when it comes to performing, I need to feel as natural as possible,” she explained. “I can’t perform with wigs. I can’t perform with super extra high heels. I need to be as organic as possible, because the way I move is like that.”
Shakira also opened up about her complex relationship with her hair — something she calls both a symbol of identity and a source of frustration. “My hair has been my identity for a long time,” she told Women’s Wear Daily. “I love it because I need it, but I also hate it when it makes me suffer.”
The singer confessed to many difficult salon visits. “I’m one of those women who has left many times from the salon crying, feeling that life is over after they burn your hair trying to bleach it,” she admitted.
Now, with her own haircare brand, Isima, Shakira is channeling those experiences into creating products that address her hair’s “very complex needs.”
