DeepSeek to Open-Source AI Code Amid Controversy and Global Attention

The company emphasized that these code repositories, which have been deployed, documented, and battle-tested in production, represent foundational components of its online service

DeepSeek, a Chinese software company that has recently made waves in the AI industry, has announced plans to make the source code for its artificial intelligence (AI) model publicly available. The company intends to open-source five code repositories for its machine-learning software starting next week, aiming to foster “garage-energy and community-driven innovation.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), DeepSeek shared its excitement: “We’re a tiny team @deepseek_ai exploring AGI. Starting next week, we’ll be open-sourcing 5 repos, sharing our small but sincere progress with full transparency.”

The company emphasized that these code repositories, which have been deployed, documented, and battle-tested in production, represent foundational components of its online service. DeepSeek is committed to contributing to the open-source community, believing that every line of code shared adds to collective momentum in advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI). “No ivory towers – just pure garage-energy and community-driven innovation,” the post continued.

DeepSeek garnered significant attention last month for its AI model, which was praised for its capabilities similar to major U.S. models like ChatGPT, but at a fraction of the cost. This raised concerns among American tech companies, with stock prices reportedly dropping in response to the software’s success.

However, DeepSeek’s rise has not been without controversy. Just days ago, the software was banned in South Korea after officials accused the company of sending user data to ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok. South Korea’s data protection regulator, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), confirmed that it had discovered communication between DeepSeek and ByteDance but has yet to clarify the extent of any data transfers.

Despite the controversy, DeepSeek’s decision to open-source its AI code is a significant move that will likely draw further scrutiny from both supporters and critics. The company’s transparent approach could bolster innovation in AI development, but it will also be under intense international scrutiny due to concerns over data privacy and its ties to China.
