From ‘Water’ to Fashion Icon: Tyla Opens Up in British Vogue

In her interview with British Vogue, Tyla explained how clothes can completely transform her persona

South African singer Tyla is embracing her newfound love for fashion and the transformative power of clothing. As the cover star of British Vogue’s March issue, the 23-year-old pop sensation opens up about how playing “dress-up” makes her feel like a diva and the creative freedom she experiences in the fashion world.

Tyla, who gained international recognition with her hit single “Water” in 2023, is no stranger to the spotlight, both on stage and on the runway. Her debut at Milan Fashion Week in February 2023, where she showcased a vintage early ’90s-inspired look, marked the beginning of her fashion journey. Since then, Tyla has become a fashion icon in her own right, collaborating with designers like Thebe Magugu, who admires how she reimagines his designs with her unique touch.

In her interview with British Vogue, Tyla explained how clothes can completely transform her persona. “Playing dress-up is fun,” she said. “And I love wearing heels. It just makes me feel more like a diva!” The pop star revealed that she is deeply involved in the creative process, ensuring that her outfits reflect her mood and personal style. “I’m very hands-on with everything I put out. I know how I want to feel that day and how I want to look.”

Tyla’s fashion journey also included a memorable performance at Louis Vuitton’s introduction to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she was invited by the brand’s creative director, Pharrell Williams. She recalled her excitement meeting Pharrell, with a humorous twist: “My mum kept calling me saying, ‘Don’t forget to tell him I said hello!’”

Celebrated Johannesburg-based designer Thebe Magugu also praised Tyla’s fearless approach to fashion, noting how she effortlessly transforms his pieces into something uniquely hers. He shared, “Tyla has so much fun with fashion… she takes my collections and completely twists, tucks, cuts and transforms them into something only Tyla can pull off.”
The full feature on Tyla’s fashion and music journey will be available in the March issue of British Vogue, on newsstands and for digital download from February 25.
