Her American Idol colleagues have also reacted with awe and admiration. Fellow judge Luke Bryan said he was initially stunned to hear Katy would be heading to space
Pop superstar Katy Perry has described her recent 11-minute journey to the edge of space as “totally crazy.” The Firework hitmaker joined an all-female Blue Origin crew earlier this month, making headlines not just for the journey itself but also for the symbolic tribute she carried with her – a small daisy in honor of her daughter, Daisy.
Perry, 39, who shares her four-year-old daughter with fiancé Orlando Bloom, was part of a pioneering mission alongside Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn. Speaking to reporters after the mission, she reflected on the powerful emotional experience.
“This experience is second to being a mom,” she said. “That’s why it was hard for me to go, because that’s all my love right there, and I have to surrender and trust that the universe is going to take care of me and protect me and also my family and daughter.”
Katy said the journey was about more than just exploration. “To go to space is incredible, and I wanted to model courage, worthiness and fearlessness.”
Her American Idol colleagues have also reacted with awe and admiration. Fellow judge Luke Bryan said he was initially stunned to hear Katy would be heading to space.
“I remember when I heard the news that she was going, I was like, ‘Wow, that’s crazy,’” Luke told E! News. “But now when she got back safe I was like, ‘Oh my god, wow. Awesome.’”
Though the two have only exchanged brief texts since her return, Luke is eager to hear more details. “She was just like, ‘It was just totally crazy.’ She didn’t really elaborate more than that,” he added.
American Idol host Ryan Seacrest also expressed admiration for Perry’s bravery. “I’m very, very happy that she did it and got back safely. She’s braver than I am,” he said.
Veteran judge Lionel Richie, however, had no interest in joining her on the journey. “When she said she was going to space I said, ‘You go right on.’ I’ll stay right down here,” he quipped. “I told her, ‘I’ll wait here.’ God bless it, she came back.”
Carrie Underwood, who temporarily replaced Katy on American Idol, echoed Richie’s sentiment. “It’s crazy. It’s amazing,” she said. “But I’m good on the ground.”
Katy’s brief but historic trip marks another step forward for civilian spaceflight, and her participation—along with a group of accomplished women—adds a bold and symbolic chapter to the growing intersection of pop culture and space exploration.
