Legacy-Driven Research Funding Launches

The fund welcomes a wide array of topics, including the life and impact of Sheikh Zayed, UAE’s archaeological and intangible history, the history of the Arabian Peninsula and South Asia, and conferences or lectures that address these areas

The Zayed National Museum has invited researchers worldwide to apply for the 2025 edition of the Zayed National Museum Research Fund, with a total allocation of AED 1 million. This fund is dedicated to supporting ambitious research projects that contribute to the preservation and deepening of knowledge about the heritage and culture of the United Arab Emirates and the broader region.

Inspired by the enduring values of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Research Fund is committed to empowering both seasoned scholars and emerging researchers. By offering both large and small grants, it aims to enable rigorous academic exploration that revives and preserves the UAE’s rich cultural legacy, while also encouraging innovation and intellectual resilience. These grants reflect Sheikh Zayed’s vision of a knowledge-driven society that honors its past while shaping its future.

Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, emphasized that supporting research and creativity reinforces the UAE’s dedication to preserving its heritage. He said that the UAE’s position as a historic crossroads of culture and ideas makes the Research Fund a natural continuation of this legacy. According to him, such insights are not only essential for building new knowledge but also help strengthen national identity and inspire future generations. By empowering researchers to explore and share the UAE’s story, the fund fosters pride and cultural continuity in communities across the country.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel comprising representatives from the Zayed National Museum, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, and subject matter experts from around the world. Projects will be assessed based on research methodology, applicant experience, projected outcomes, and how well they align with the museum’s mandate. The fund welcomes a wide array of topics, including the life and impact of Sheikh Zayed, UAE’s archaeological and intangible history, the history of the Arabian Peninsula and South Asia, and conferences or lectures that address these areas.

Dr. Peter Magee, Director of Zayed National Museum, highlighted the importance of the Research Fund in deepening understanding of the region’s cultural roots. He noted that each grant awarded contributes to the expanding body of knowledge that preserves the UAE’s historical continuity and enriches contemporary discourse. Dr. Magee added that the museum’s support for original research reflects its role not only as a heritage institution but as a platform for intellectual discovery and cultural engagement.

Dr. Magee expressed pride in the museum’s impact as a research hub, stating that its role is essential in inspiring the next generation of historians, archaeologists, and thinkers. Through ongoing support for high-quality academic work, the Zayed National Museum helps ensure that future generations can access and appreciate the rich stories and traditions that have shaped the UAE and its neighbors.

Since its inception in 2023, the Research Fund has supported 18 projects spanning countries such as China, Egypt, India, Italy, France, Oman, Poland, the UAE, the UK, and the USA. These projects have investigated diverse subjects like the rock art of Arabia, Sheikh Zayed’s societal contributions, ancient DNA analysis, historical trade routes, and transformations in Bronze Age communities in Al Ain. These efforts reflect the wide-ranging interest and scholarly potential the UAE holds for global researchers.

The Zayed National Museum, built on the vision and values of Sheikh Zayed, is set to be the most comprehensive resource for understanding the UAE’s cultural and historical journey. By offering immersive exhibitions, public engagement, and academic support, the museum seeks to uphold values such as progress, unity, and preservation.

Researchers interested in applying to the 2025 Research Fund must submit their applications by July 14, 2025. Full details and application guidelines are available at https://zayednationalmuseum.ae/en/research/research-fund-2025. The initiative marks a significant step toward building a globally connected academic network committed to safeguarding and advancing knowledge of the UAE’s unique heritage.
