In an interview with PEOPLE, Gellar explained that she used to worry about being trendy and concerned about how others would perceive her fashion choices
Sarah Michelle Gellar is embracing a more daring approach to fashion as she enters her late 40s, feeling less pressure to adhere to trends and more focused on expressing herself. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star, now 47, admits that age has brought with it a newfound sense of confidence, allowing her to step outside of her comfort zone when it comes to her wardrobe choices.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Gellar explained that she used to worry about being trendy and concerned about how others would perceive her fashion choices.
“I think that there was a time when I worried so much about what was trendy and what people would think of how I looked in it,” she said. “Now, I’m more invested in myself and wanting to try things that are different. I think it’s been successful for me lately.”
The actress revealed that, at this stage in her life, she is more open to experimenting with her style. “I’ve been going outside of my comfort zones, which is rare, I think, at my age,” she confessed. “But I don’t know, maybe there’s a confidence that comes with age? You get to be a little bit more daring.”
Gellar’s shift in attitude toward fashion has led her to take more risks in what she wears, from bold statement pieces to unexpected combinations, allowing her personality and confidence to shine through. This evolution in her style reflects her growing self-assurance and willingness to embrace change as she enters a new chapter in her life.
Reflecting on her time portraying Buffy Summers, the iconic character from the hit 1990s show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gellar fondly remembered some of her memorable outfits, though not without a few regrets. She admitted that some of her early costumes were less than flattering. “With Buffy, some of the looks I’m all for, but some of the early outfits, I’m just like, did you really need to mix leopard and stripes?” she shared with British Vogue. “Is that really a thing?”
She continued, “I remember I was so ambitious in the first season. It was when all the Hard Candy nail polish was in, and I had a different nail color every episode. It was great in theory, but when you get to the end of the season and you’re doing pick-ups and every five seconds trying to change the polish on your nails, you realize that’s really not the best idea to do.”
While she may look back on those days with a mix of fondness and a touch of cringe, Gellar is now more focused on expressing herself authentically through fashion rather than adhering to fleeting trends. As she moves forward in her career and life, her evolving style reflects a deeper sense of self-assurance and the freedom to explore new looks without hesitation.
At 47, Gellar’s fashion journey mirrors her personal growth, showing that confidence and a willingness to take risks can make all the difference in both style and life.
