Sharon Stone Keeps All Her Screen Outfits After Embarrassing Early Experience

One of the most iconic pieces in her collection is the white mini-dress she wore in the famous interrogation scene from Basic Instinct

Stone also reminisced about the costumes from her role in Casino, where she wore some stunning pieces designed by Rita Ryack. She particularly fondly recalls the Pucci jacket that her character Ginger wears in the film’s dramatic final scenes.

Sharon Stone, the iconic Hollywood actress known for her roles in Basic Instinct and Casino, has revealed that she has a unique clause in her contracts that allows her to take home all her screen costumes. This decision came after an uncomfortable experience early in her career when the wardrobe she wore on set was sold off, including her personal items.
Stone, now 66, shared this personal story with The Sunday Times’ Style magazine, recounting how, in the 1980s, after starring in a television film, the studio decided to sell off her wardrobe at a discount in order to recoup some of the production costs. To her shock and embarrassment, her underwear was among the items put up for sale.

“I was so embarrassed and uncomfortable that the crew guys were rummaging around in my underpants,” she said. “I thought, never again.” Stone described the experience as mortifying and it led her to make a key decision regarding her future roles.

To prevent such an incident from happening again, she made sure that her contracts from then on would include a clause stipulating that she would keep all her clothes from the films she worked on, unless the costumes were rentals from the studio. This move allowed her to maintain control over her wardrobe and avoid any more embarrassing situations related to her on-screen outfits.

One of the most iconic pieces in her collection is the white mini-dress she wore in the famous interrogation scene from Basic Instinct. Stone shared that while this particular dress is safely stored away, she regularly wears many of the shoes from the movie, including black split-toe Gucci heels and strappy gold-studded ones. “I have a ton of shoes from that movie in my closet,” she said. “The rest of the costumes are in storage.”

Stone also reminisced about the costumes from her role in Casino, where she wore some stunning pieces designed by Rita Ryack. She particularly fondly recalls the Pucci jacket that her character Ginger wears in the film’s dramatic final scenes. “What an amazing job Rita Ryack, the costume designer, did. I took the Pucci jacket that Ginger dies in,” she revealed, reflecting on the significance of the outfits in shaping her roles.
Beyond her experiences with wardrobe, Stone also discussed her changing body and how she’s learned to embrace aging with grace. While acknowledging that her body has changed over the years, she explained how she’s come to appreciate her flaws. “A lot of people give up as they get older. They let go of their body because it’s collapsing anyway, or it’s like, ‘I’m not defined by my body anymore.’ But you still have to love that body,” she said.

She humorously added, “I joke that my underarms have pleats now. I think, ‘Well, I had beautiful arms and now they’re strong and painting and like angel wings. So what if they have pleats? Maybe that’s what makes them wonderful now.'”

Stone also shared a piece of advice she once received from the late Jackie Collins’ sister, Joan. During a game of billiards at Collins’ house, Joan imparted a nugget of wisdom: “After 40, never get on top and never wave goodbye.” It’s clear from this comment that Stone, like many women of her age, is embracing the inevitable changes that come with time but refuses to be defined by them.
In reflecting on her career and personal life, Stone’s decision to keep her costumes serves as a metaphor for her approach to her career—one that allows her to hold onto her past while also embracing the future. From iconic dresses to unforgettable shoes, the actress’s wardrobe is a tangible reminder of her remarkable journey in Hollywood.
