£850,000 Upgrades Transform Barking and Dagenham Leisure Centres

The facility has undergone a visual transformation, incorporating Everyone Active’s signature red and black decor, modern LED lighting, and noise-reducing rubber flooring

Two leisure centres in Barking and Dagenham have received extensive gym upgrades worth £850,000, marking a significant boost to the borough’s fitness facilities.

Abbey Leisure Centre in Barking unveiled its revamped gym just before Christmas. The centre now boasts a complete redesign and state-of-the-art equipment, setting a new standard for fitness in the area. A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the centre, with Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, and key staff from operator Everyone Active in attendance to celebrate the opening.

The redesigned gym at Abbey Leisure Centre features advanced equipment from leading brands Life Fitness and Hammer Strength. Members can explore expanded cardio options, including high-tech treadmills, exercise bikes, and rowing machines. For strength training, the centre now offers free weights, plate-loaded machines, and cable equipment. Additionally, a relaxation zone with massage guns has been introduced for post-workout recovery.

The facility has undergone a visual transformation, incorporating Everyone Active’s signature red and black decor, modern LED lighting, and noise-reducing rubber flooring. New amenities include a Grab and Go food service, a contemporary seating area, and a retail space.

Becontree Heath Leisure Centre has also received substantial upgrades, focusing on strength training. The new features include Olympic lifting platforms and advanced Life Fitness equipment. The centre’s changing facilities have also been significantly improved to enhance user comfort.

Councillor Saima Ashraf expressed her enthusiasm, stating: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see the doors reopen to these centres with state-of-the-art facilities for residents to enjoy. The completed works have come at the perfect time with many of us getting our new year’s resolutions into action. So, if improving your health and fitness, or simply finding a new hobby is one of them, I encourage you to plan a visit.”

Hasan Romel, Area Contract Manager at Everyone Active, shared his excitement about the upgrades. “We’re incredibly excited to welcome our community back and invite everyone to come down and see the transformation for themselves at our centres.

“We’re seeing a clear shift toward hybrid training approaches, where people want both comprehensive strength training facilities and advanced cardio options. These upgrades deliver exactly that, ensuring our centres remain aligned with contemporary fitness trends while providing the high-quality facilities our residents deserve.”

The enhanced leisure centres are now open, providing residents with cutting-edge fitness options to support their health and wellness goals.
