Barnet Adopts Local Plan to Shape Growth Until 2036

Barnet Council has formally adopted its new Local Plan, setting the framework for development across the borough until 2036. The plan replaces the previous 2012 version and outlines a vision for sustainable growth, housing, and infrastructure.

The plan targets the delivery of nearly 44,000 new homes in key areas, alongside 67,000 m² of office space, a new metropolitan town centre at Brent Cross, and a regional park with sports and recreational hubs.

Deputy Leader Cllr Ross Houston said the plan reflects Barnet’s commitment to balancing development with sustainability, ensuring that housing, infrastructure, and climate priorities align.

Shaped through public consultation since 2016, the Local Plan includes 51 policies and 58 site proposals, supporting 27,000 new jobs and improvements in transport, including the West London Orbital Railway and new stations at Colindale and Brent Cross West.

Following examination by an independent planning inspector, the plan is now part of Barnet’s Development Plan, guiding long-term regeneration while ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with growth.
