Blitz squad prepares for South Norwood

The blitz clean will focus on key areas including the High Street, Station Road, and Portland Road

Croydon Council has announced the commencement of a three-week intensive clean-up operation in South Norwood, starting today, as part of its Cleaner Croydon campaign. The initiative is aimed at restoring pride in the borough by creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for residents and local businesses.

The blitz clean will focus on key areas including the High Street, Station Road, and Portland Road. Crews will undertake a series of activities designed to improve the overall appearance and functionality of these areas. This initiative will run concurrently with the South Norwood Regeneration Programme, which includes new highway surfacing, paving, and the replacement of benches and cycle parking facilities. The designs for these improvements have been developed in collaboration with a working group comprising local residents and businesses.

The enhancements to Hounslow’s library services are part of a wider effort to modernise and improve public services. By embracing digital technology and creating community hubs, Hounslow Council aims to provide residents with a more convenient and enriching experience.

Creating a cleaner and more welcoming environment is a top priority for Jason Perry, the Executive Mayor of Croydon. “The blitz cleans in Norbury, Thornton Heath, New Addington, and Addiscombe have been really impactful,” said Perry. “I’m looking forward to working with South Norwood’s residents and businesses to make locals feel proud of their great high street. Clean streets are an essential part of creating safe, welcoming spaces where residents and businesses can thrive.”

The intensive clean-up has been specifically tailored using feedback from residents and businesses. Activities will include cleaning bins, repairing damaged footways, and refreshing road line markings. Graffiti and fly-posting, including stickers and posters from lampposts and windows, will also be removed. The Council’s trading standards team will offer support and advice to local businesses to ensure they are compliant with environmental regulations.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to actively participate in the maintenance of their area by reporting issues such as fly-tipping, graffiti, and other environmental concerns. The Love Clean Streets app and the Council’s website provide convenient platforms for reporting these issues. The Council is committed to clearing 98% of reported fly-tips within 24 hours, demonstrating its dedication to maintaining a clean and safe environment.

“We can all do our bit to look after where we live,” said Mayor Perry. “I encourage anyone who sees fly-tipping or other environmental issues to report them to the Council so something can be done about them.”

Residents and businesses interested in getting involved in the Cleaner Croydon campaign can find more information through the Council’s official channels. The campaign aims to foster a sense of community responsibility and pride, encouraging everyone to contribute to the upkeep of their local area.

The Cleaner Croydon campaign is not just about a one-time clean-up; it is about creating a sustainable and long-term solution to environmental issues. By engaging with the community and providing the necessary tools and support, the Council hopes to create a lasting impact that will benefit all residents and businesses in the borough.

As the blitz clean gets underway in South Norwood, the community is invited to join forces with the Council to make their high street a place they can be proud of. Together, they aim to transform South Norwood into a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant area where everyone can thrive.

The Cleaner Croydon campaign was launched by Croydon Council with the goal of addressing environmental issues across the borough. The campaign has already seen successful blitz clean operations in Norbury, Thornton Heath, New Addington, and Addiscombe. These efforts have been praised for their impact on local communities, significantly improving the cleanliness and safety of these areas.

The campaign’s success is attributed to its community-focused approach. By engaging residents and businesses in the process, the Council has been able to tailor its efforts to address specific local needs. This collaborative approach not only ensures that the clean-up operations are effective but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members.

Community involvement is a cornerstone of the Cleaner Croydon campaign. Residents and businesses are encouraged to report environmental issues through the Love Clean Streets app or directly on the Council’s website. This active participation ensures that issues are addressed promptly, contributing to the overall cleanliness and safety of the area.

The Council’s commitment to clearing 98% of reported fly-tips within 24 hours is a testament to its dedication to maintaining a clean environment. This rapid response not only helps to keep the streets clean but also sends a strong message that environmental issues are taken seriously.
