Brent issues new guidance for home extensions

By addressing common planning and design considerations, the new guidance aims to reduce delays and help families proceed smoothly with their plans.

Brent Council has introduced updated guidance aimed at helping residents secure planning permission for home extensions and alterations. With the housing crisis compelling many families to optimise their existing spaces rather than relocate, this initiative seeks to make the planning process clearer and more efficient.

The new document, titled the Residential Extensions and Alterations Supplementary Planning Document, offers detailed advice on designing extensions that are more likely to gain planning approval. By addressing common planning and design considerations, the guidance aims to reduce delays and help families proceed smoothly with their plans.

Brent is home to a diverse range of housing types, styles, and sizes, and while the guidance cannot cater to every unique scenario, it outlines general principles that homeowners should consider when preparing their applications. The document will serve not only as a resource for residents but also as a reference for the council during the planning application review process.

“This updated design guide document will make it clearer and simpler for residents to secure planning approval.”
-Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council

Councillor Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, highlighted the benefits of the updated guidance, stating: “I want to see residents unlock extra space in their homes with extensions, alterations and other enhancements that work for them. This updated design guide document will make it clearer and simpler for residents to secure planning approval, and see that extra value unlocked in their own home without ever needing to move.”

The council encourages residents to use its pre-application service to receive advice and feedback before formally submitting their proposals. For assistance with applications or using the planning portal, residents are advised to contact the Planning Team directly. This initiative is part of Brent Council’s commitment to tackling overcrowding and supporting growing families by ensuring residents have access to resources that make expanding their homes both feasible and practical.
