Brent Youth Lead Green Movement with New Doc

Local young people take centre stage in the fight against climate change with their new documentary ‘Roots of Brent’.

Young people in Brent are stepping up to tackle climate change through a powerful new documentary, Roots of Brent. The film, which premiered at the Brent Climate Showcase, captures the voices of local youth as they explore the environmental challenges facing their community and highlight the inspiring action being taken to combat them.

The documentary is the result of six months of dedicated work by young people aged 7 to 25. Supported by Brent Council’s climate action programme and sponsored by FM Conway, the project provided participants with a platform to learn about climate change while developing key documentary production skills. From conducting interviews to presenting and editing, the young filmmakers gained hands-on experience in storytelling and media production.

Roots of Brent not only sheds light on the effects of climate change at a local level but also celebrates the proactive efforts of Brent’s youth in driving positive environmental change. By sharing their stories, the filmmakers hope to inspire their peers and the wider community to take meaningful action.

Councillor Jake Rubin, Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Community Power, praised the initiative, saying:

“It’s inspiring to see young people taking such an active role in addressing climate change. Roots of Brent offers a fresh perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing Brent and highlights the importance of empowering the next generation of climate leaders.”

Robert Jacobs, Service Delivery Manager at FM Conway, also commended the project:

“We’re proud to support the Roots of Brent Youth Film Project and the opportunities it provides for young people in the borough. Climate change affects us all, and initiatives like this ensure the younger generation is engaged in finding solutions. By equipping them with new skills, we’re also helping them prepare for their future careers.”

For participants like Zakaria Khan, 12, from Harlesden, the experience was both educational and rewarding:

“It was great because I got to learn new skills and made new friends. I also learned more about what is causing climate change and how to prevent it.”

Brent Council continues to support youth-led climate action, recognising that young people play a crucial role in shaping a greener, more sustainable future for the borough. Roots of Brent serves as a testament to their passion, creativity, and determination to make a difference.
