Brent youths win recognition

Brent Youth Parliament (BYP), a youth-led political forum that amplifies the voices of young people across the borough, was shortlisted for two accolades at the London Youth Achievement Awards

The bright lights of London’s City Hall shone on some of Brent’s most dedicated and passionate young changemakers this weekend, as the Brent Youth Parliament was recognised for its growing role in strengthening local democracy.

Brent Youth Parliament (BYP), a youth-led political forum that amplifies the voices of young people across the borough, was shortlisted for two accolades at the London Youth Achievement Awards held on 2 May. Organised by the London Assembly, the event honoured the capital’s most inspiring youth initiatives and leaders.

BYP’s commitment to meaningful youth engagement was acknowledged with a nomination for the Best Initiative Award, highlighting its recent lobbying of Brent Council’s Community and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee on youth health issues, particularly vaping and access to illegal substances. The group’s activism has successfully brought forward concerns from young residents and pushed for policy discussions that better reflect the needs of Brent’s younger population.

The Parliament’s chair, Kenechi Ezeajughi, was also a finalist in the Greener London Award category for her outstanding leadership in environmental awareness. Under her direction, BYP launched a campaign to promote sustainability among local youth, encouraging environmentally friendly practices across schools and community groups.

“It was an honour to be nominated and shortlisted for the London Youth Achievement Award in the Greener London Category,” said Kenechi. “My primary responsibility was to lead a task force for the environmental campaign aimed at raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices among the youth and the wider community. None of this would have been possible without the support of Brent Youth Parliament and my family.”

While the Parliament did not take home either award on the night, the shortlisting itself was a testament to their growing influence. Members of the youth parliament celebrated the recognition together at City Hall, in a night that brought together youth representatives from across London.

Local councillors praised the young leaders for their commitment and impact. Councillor Ketan Sheth, Chair of the Community and Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee, said: “The awards ceremony was a fantastic night of well-deserved recognition for Brent Youth Parliament. We’ve seen an increase in young people getting involved and asking questions of council decision-makers through BYP’s activism. It has been amazing to see how their hard work and dedication has made youth participation meaningful in Council forums. We are very proud of them.”

Councillor Gwen Grahl, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools, added: “The young leaders of Brent Youth Parliament are equipping children in Brent schools and youth groups to take part in local democracy. It’s wonderful to see young people directly setting future agendas. I want to congratulate Brent Youth Parliament and Kenechi for everything they’ve achieved.”

Brent Youth Parliament continues to build its platform and reach, offering a critical space for young residents to engage in civic life. Their recognition at the London Youth Achievement Awards reflects the importance of youth-led advocacy in shaping inclusive and responsive local governance — a reminder that democracy begins in the community, often led by those with the most at stake in its future.
