Bring the Kingston 2025 party to your street

Kingston residents are invited to celebrate the borough’s rich history and vibrant communities by hosting their own street parties as part of the Kingston 2025 festivities.

Kingston 2025 invites local residents to throw street parties to celebrate the borough’s history, people, and culture. The Royal Borough of Kingston is gearing up for a spectacular celebration to mark a monumental milestone—the 1,100th anniversary of the crowning of King Athelstan, the first King of a united England. The Kingston 2025 festivities will officially kick off on Saturday, 3 May, and will continue through the summer.

As part of this momentous occasion, residents are encouraged to come together and host their own street parties to celebrate their unique community spirit. Kingston has a long tradition of hosting street parties, and 2025 promises to continue this legacy with even more excitement.

Leader of Kingston Council, Cllr Andreas Kirsch, is urging local residents to get involved. He said, “A party is a fantastic way to connect with your neighbours, bring different generations together to share in the fun. It’s free to apply for a temporary road closure to hold a street party in Kingston, making it easier than ever to create a memorable event right on your doorstep.”

With a special focus on the 1,100th anniversary of King Athelstan’s crowning, this summer promises to be filled with fun, culture, and connection.

Kingston 2025 is more than just a party; it is a celebration of the borough’s rich and diverse history, and the vibrant communities who live, work, and study here. It marks the crowning of King Athelstan in Kingston over a thousand years ago and celebrates everything that makes the area so special. The event will highlight the heritage, cultures, and traditions that have shaped Kingston into the borough it is today.

For those interested in hosting a street party, applying for a temporary road closure is easy. Once approved, residents will receive a downloadable pack containing everything needed to make their street party a success. The pack includes template posters, activity suggestions, and instructions on how to share photos of the event to be included in Kingston’s archive.

While street parties don’t have to follow a specific theme, there are plenty of ideas to draw inspiration from, reflecting Kingston’s royal and cultural history. For example, residents could celebrate Kingston’s royal legacy by honouring past Coronations, Royal Jubilees, and Weddings, or highlight the borough’s rich cultural heritage by sharing traditional dishes from around the world. Residents may also choose to mark significant historical anniversaries, such as the 80th anniversaries of VE Day or VJ Day, while reflecting on Kingston’s role as the home of the Hawker aircraft factory during the Second World War.

To apply for a street party road closure, residents must complete an application form on the Kingston Council website. They’ll need to ensure that at least 75% of local residents and businesses support the closure. After submitting the application, Kingston Council will offer guidance and support throughout the process. Applicants are advised to allow up to eight weeks for approval.

Kingston 2025 promises to be a summer of celebration, bringing communities together and honouring the borough’s past while looking forward to an exciting future. Whether you’re celebrating Kingston’s royal legacy, its diverse communities, or key historical moments, it’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with neighbours and celebrate what makes Kingston truly special.
