Festivities throughout April and beyond include guided walks, Library Lates, and an interactive art trail
Residents are invited to join in celebrating Bromley’s 60th anniversary with a special programme of activities, including events at the borough’s cherished libraries.
Festivities throughout April and beyond include guided walks, Library Lates, and an interactive art trail. Community groups and partners are encouraged to contribute their own events to the year-long commemorative programme. Residents can also attend Bromley 60th birthday parties at libraries, similar to the popular library coffee mornings.
The Mayor will launch the celebrations by participating in an Interactive Art Trail across Bromley Town Centre on Saturday, March 29, organized by Quest Soul Theatre. This follows his recent 50-mile boundary walking challenge.
Mayor of Bromley, Councillor David Jefferys, expressed his enthusiasm: “I am delighted to share this special programme with residents and look forward to seeing many of you at these events as we celebrate this milestone year. I extend my gratitude to the partners and community groups who have already contributed and encourage others to join in, so we can offer even more opportunities for residents to come together.”
As part of the Broom Day celebrations, the Mayor will also lead a walk from an exhibition in The Glades to St Martin’s Hill on Saturday, May 3, hosted by the Bromley Civic Society, to view the Broom flower—the inspiration behind Bromley’s name.
Schools are encouraged to participate by organizing a ‘1965 Day,’ where students can dress in period attire and learn about life in Bromley’s founding year. Additionally, a children’s art competition invites students to design an A4-sized 60th birthday card or cake for Bromley.
Following the Mayor’s boundary walk, five historical town centre walks will soon be available to residents via the council’s website. These walks will highlight the borough’s history, connecting the five town halls of the District and Urban councils that merged in April 1965 to form the London Borough of Bromley. A sixth walk in Biggin Hill will also be introduced to ensure broader participation across the borough.
