Celebrating Indian Cinema and Sports in London

The High Commission of India in London hosted a special screening of ’83’, Dangal, and Chak De! India, celebrating Indian cinema’s global influence and sporting spirit. High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami highlighted the films’ cultural significance and announced the upcoming World Audio Visual Summit in Mumbai.

The High Commission of India in London hosted an exclusive film screening at the prestigious Mayfair Hotel, presenting three iconic Indian sports films: ’83’, Dangal, and Chak De! India. The event, attended by over 250 guests from diverse backgrounds, showcased the power of Indian cinema in promoting unity, teamwork, and national pride while celebrating India’s sporting triumphs.

A Night of Cinematic Excellence

High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, Vikram Doraiswami, delivered an inspiring speech, reflecting on the cultural significance of the films. He highlighted their role in bridging cultural divides and promoting values deeply rooted in India’s ethos.

“Film, as you know, is India’s most favoured form of entertainment. Cricket, of course, is religion. A film that brings together cricket and storytelling is a winner in and of itself.”

He emphasised the historical role of storytelling in India, calling it an essential part of the human experience. “Everything we do, even our religious traditions, is an essence of telling stories,” he remarked, noting how Indian cinema uniquely combines storytelling, music, and dance to provide an immersive experience.

Bridging Cultures: Indian and UK Film Industries

A key focus of the evening was the growing collaboration between the Indian and UK film industries. Doraiswami praised the UK’s creative sectors, including film studios, animation, and gaming, for their contribution to the success of Indian films.

“The film industry is one of the big potential drivers of a future partnership between India and the UK,” he said, pointing to the increasing use of UK studios for Indian productions. He further expressed optimism about continued engagement and collaboration through films and creative industries.

Looking ahead, Doraiswami announced the inaugural World Audio Visual Summit (WAVE) in Mumbai this February, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address industry leaders, regulators, and creators from India and the UK.

Celebrating India’s Sporting Spirit

The three films screened at the event celebrate India’s sporting achievements and their role in uniting the nation:

  1. ’83’
Directed by Kabir Khan, this film chronicles India’s historic victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Led by Kapil Dev, played by Ranveer Singh, the Indian cricket team defied all odds to claim their first-ever World Cup title.
  2. Dangal
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, this biographical drama follows Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) as he trains his daughters, Geeta and Babita, to become world-class wrestlers. The film challenges societal norms and highlights female empowerment.
  3. Chak De! India
Shimit Amin’s masterpiece stars Shah Rukh Khan as Kabir Khan, a former hockey player turned coach of India’s women’s hockey team. The story celebrates teamwork and resilience as the team unites to win the World Cup.

A Cinematic Bond

The evening underscored the unique bond between cinema and sport in India. Doraiswami reflected on how these films inspire not only Indians but audiences worldwide, transcending language barriers and cultural differences.

With Indian cinema growing as a global powerhouse, events like this screening pave the way for deeper cultural and creative ties between India and the UK.
