Misusing Blue Badges, whether through theft, counterfeiting, using cancelled badges, or those belonging to deceased individuals, is a criminal offence
Croydon is taking a firm stance against Blue Badge fraud, with the local council leading an intensive crackdown across the borough. The initiative aims to tackle the misuse of Blue Badges, which is not only illegal but also significantly impacts those who genuinely rely on them for essential support.
Misusing Blue Badges, whether through theft, counterfeiting, using cancelled badges, or those belonging to deceased individuals, is a criminal offence. Croydon Council is making it clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated. The crackdown involves imposing fines on those caught misusing a Blue Badge, and in some cases, taking legal action if the badge is not surrendered.
The first court dates for Blue Badge fraud cases are expected to take place later this summer. This legal action is a significant step in ensuring that those who misuse the badges face the consequences of their actions.
To enforce the crackdown, tow trucks will be deployed to remove vehicles that are using Blue Badges incorrectly. Owners of towed vehicles will be able to retrieve their vehicles only after paying a fine and handing over the misused badge. This measure is intended to deter potential offenders and to reclaim parking spaces for those who genuinely need them.

Someone using a Blue Badge when they are not eligible is so unfair on those who depend on them and really makes lives more difficult. Anyone misusing a Blue Badge in Croydon should prepare for their vehicle to be towed and to be called to court for the crime.
Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon
Blue Badges are designed to provide essential support for individuals with mobility issues. They make it easier for badge holders to visit shops, meet friends and family, and attend medical appointments. Fraudulent misuse of these badges not only takes away valuable parking spaces but also makes life much harder for those who truly need them.
The crackdown is part of Executive Mayor Jason Perry’s priority to target antisocial behaviour and support genuine Blue Badge users in leading independent lives. It also aims to free up more parking spaces for those who need them most.

Mayor Perry emphasised the importance of the crackdown, stating, “Like many London councils, we believe we have a large number of Blue Badges being fraudulently used. Someone using a Blue Badge when they are not eligible is so unfair on those who depend on them and really makes lives more difficult. Residents have told me they are concerned about this problem, which is why we are taking action to tackle it. Anyone misusing a Blue Badge in Croydon should prepare for their vehicle to be towed and to be called to court for the crime.”
It is important to note that Blue Badges should only be displayed if the holder is travelling in the vehicle, or if someone is collecting the badge holder or dropping them off and needs to park. The council also reminds the public that not all disabilities are visible. If residents suspect someone is misusing a badge, they are advised not to confront the individual but to contact the Council through the Love Clean Streets app.
The crackdown on Blue Badge fraud is a significant step towards ensuring that these badges are used fairly and appropriately. By taking strong action against misuse, Croydon Council aims to protect the rights of genuine badge holders and improve the overall accessibility and fairness of parking provisions in the borough.
