Dugdale Launches Backstage Skills Course

This one-of-a-kind course offers young and aspiring professionals an unparalleled opportunity to train in a working studio theatre environment under the guidance of seasoned industry experts.

Dugdale Arts Centre (DAC) in Enfield has opened applications for its newly launched Emerging Technicians programme — a free, hands-on masterclass series designed to equip early-career technicians with the technical skills, industry insights, and professional confidence needed to thrive in the world of live performance.

Created in collaboration with the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT), this one-of-a-kind course offers young and aspiring professionals an unparalleled opportunity to train in a working studio theatre environment under the guidance of seasoned industry experts. Whether it’s setting up lighting rigs, managing live sound, or learning how to run a production backstage, the course provides a solid foundation in the core areas of technical theatre.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to kick-start their career after university or even someone exploring a new direction in their professional journey. This could be the moment they’ve been waiting for.”

Chinelo Anyanwu, Cabinet Member for Culture & Inclusion

The five-week programme kicks off on 14 May 2025 and will be hosted in the state-of-the-art studio theatre at Dugdale Arts Centre in Enfield Town. Participants will gain real-world experience using professional equipment, developing both technical and business skills — including how to establish themselves as sole traders in the creative sector. Alongside hands-on training, the course includes workshops that demystify the backstage world and prepare attendees for freelance or full-time work in the live performance industry.

“The Emerging Technicians programme is about empowering local talent with the tools, skills and confidence they need to thrive in a theatre or performance environment,” said Councillor Chinelo Anyanwu, Cabinet Member for Culture & Inclusion. “This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to kick-start their career after university or even someone exploring a new direction in their professional journey. This could be the moment they’ve been waiting for.”

The opportunity is open to those who have graduated within the last two years or who have up to two years of professional experience in a related field. Applicants must be available to attend each session in the series to successfully complete the course.

All participants who complete the programme will receive a recognised certificate from ABTT, a valuable addition to any emerging professional’s CV. In a further boost, a select few will also be offered paid placements on live productions at DAC, giving them a direct route into the industry and real work experience to build their portfolios.

Applications are now open and will close at 11:59pm on 5 May. Interested individuals can apply by completing a short online application form or by submitting a short video responding to the application questions. Applications should be sent to: culture@enfield.gov.uk

The DAC Emerging Technicians programme is part of Enfield Council’s broader ambition to support young people into creative careers and strengthen the borough’s cultural sector. The initiative is supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with a commitment to helping residents develop professional pathways in the arts and creative industries.

Enfield Council continues to invest in projects that unlock the potential of its young and diverse population, with the arts playing a key role in regeneration, community development, and skills building. For those looking to take their first step backstage, this programme promises not just a training ground — but a launchpad.

Applications close: 5 May at 11:59pm

Course begins: 14 May

Location: Dugdale Arts Centre, Enfield Town

Eligibility: Graduates or early-career professionals (up to 2 years’ experience)
