A new initiative to help Enfield residents quit smoking was launched on No Smoking Day, marking a significant step towards improving public health in the borough.
The ‘SmokeFree Enfield’ service, commissioned by Enfield Council and delivered by Solutions4Health, offers free and confidential support to those looking to quit. The programme provides multiple access points, including phone and email support, GP and pharmacy referrals, and self-referral options, ensuring it is easily available to all residents.
Initially, the campaign will focus on Edmonton, where smoking rates are particularly high, but the service is open to everyone in Enfield. The initiative comes as smoking remains the leading preventable cause of health inequalities and premature deaths in the borough, with approximately 230 smoking-related deaths annually and an estimated cost of £209 million to Enfield’s economy.
Councillor Alev Cazimoglu, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Enfield Council, emphasised the importance of the programme. “Enfield’s new stop smoking service will help to transform the lives of many in our community. This programme is not just about quitting smoking; it is about reclaiming healthier lives and brighter futures. The new service is free and confidential, and I encourage residents to take advantage of the invaluable resources available. Together, we can continue to pave the way for a healthier Enfield.”
SmokeFree Enfield offers a range of support methods, including behavioural counselling, access to vapes, Nicotine Replacement Therapy, prescription medication through GPs, and one-to-one, group, and online sessions with trained advisors.
The initiative has been made possible through a £2 million government grant, which will be provided over five years to sustain and expand the service.
Residents looking to quit smoking can visit the SmokeFree Enfield website for further information or call 020 3633 5033. Texting ‘QUIT’ to 66777 will also connect them with support to help them take the first step towards a smoke-free future.
