Another key participant, Sidra Publishing and Distribution, focuses on translating global literary works into Arabic, covering a range of subjects including literature, philosophy, and the arts, enriching Arabic cultural content
The Emirates Publishers Association (EPA) is making significant strides in expanding its global presence with its prominent participation at the London Book Fair, one of the world’s leading platforms for rights negotiation, content sales, and distribution. This year, the EPA is showcasing the talents of seven distinguished Emirati publishers, including two graduates from the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur).
This participation is in line with the EPA’s broader mission to empower Emirati publishers and position the UAE as a key regional and global hub for the publishing industry. The London Book Fair presents a unique opportunity for Emirati publishers to network with international counterparts, explore translation rights, forge partnerships, and discover new trends shaping the future of global publishing.
A Diverse Group of Publishers
Among the key participants is Kalimat Group, a leader in children’s literature, which began its publishing journey in 2007. Kalimat has since expanded its offerings with five specialized imprints catering to various age groups and literary genres. Also participating is Dar AlFikr AlJadeed, a publishing house dedicated to educational and managerial resources for business and management professionals.
Another key participant, Sidra Publishing and Distribution, focuses on translating global literary works into Arabic, covering a range of subjects including literature, philosophy, and the arts, enriching Arabic cultural content. Thaqafa Publishing and Distribution, established in 2008, has been contributing to the Arab cultural scene with high-quality publications across diverse interests, while Ugarit Publishing is making a significant impact with its focus on early childhood education and critical thinking programs.
The delegation also includes Shatha Nasser of Kairos Publishing and Maryam Thani AlFalasi of Ghaim Publishing, the winners of the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund’s Onshur Initiative. Both publishers are committed to enriching Arabic literature by translating classic masterpieces and Asian literary works, thus diversifying the region’s literary landscape.
A Platform for Growth and Collaboration
Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the EPA, emphasized the importance of the UAE’s participation in the London Book Fair, stating, “The UAE’s presence at international events such as the London Book Fair reflects the remarkable growth of the country’s publishing sector. We firmly believe that building global relationships with publishers worldwide opens up new avenues for collaboration and fosters knowledge and cultural exchange between nations.”
Al Kous further highlighted the significance of empowering young publishers, particularly graduates of the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund, to ensure the sustainable development of the publishing industry both locally and globally. The EPA’s involvement in the fair also reinforces its commitment to supporting local talent, opening new doors for global opportunities, and advancing the UAE’s role in the global publishing ecosystem.
The Emirates Publishers Association’s participation in the London Book Fair underscores its ongoing efforts to promote Emirati publishing talent on the world stage and strengthen its influence in international markets. Through these initiatives, the EPA is contributing to the global advancement of the publishing industry and fostering cross-cultural connections that will benefit both the UAE and the international literary community.
