GARDEN FOR GOLD

The competition is being run by Cultivating Ealing in partnership with Ealing Council and ActForEaling, a local organisation created by residents to promote climate and nature-positive activity in the borough

Ealing residents are being invited to participate in the 2025 Ealing Biodiversity Awards for Gardens and Green Spaces, a competition aimed at promoting biodiversity and environmental stewardship in the borough. Building on the success of last year’s event, the awards are open to all residents, with cash prizes up for grabs for the most biodiverse front gardens, balconies, and outdoor spaces.

The competition is being run by Cultivating Ealing in partnership with Ealing Council and ActForEaling, a local organisation created by residents to promote climate and nature-positive activity in the borough. Entry to the competition is free and open to all residents, making it an accessible opportunity for everyone to contribute to the borough’s biodiversity.

Ealing is home to approximately 75,000 front gardens, many of which are covered in hard surfaces. However, there are also hundreds of community spaces, thousands of balconies, and even more windowsills that can be transformed into biodiverse habitats. Even the smallest outdoor spaces, such as upcycled containers, can contribute to the borough’s biodiversity.

Residents are encouraged to invite their neighbours to join in creating community wildlife gardens. These can be established across a group of balconies in a block of flats or in an abandoned patch of soil. By incorporating more pots, bug hotels, bird baths, and plant varieties, residents can create homes for birds and wildlife, transforming their outdoor spaces into oases of biodiversity and beauty.

Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, expressed his enthusiasm for the competition. He said, “This competition highlights the incredible power of community action in making our borough cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful. By creating biodiverse spaces, we can improve the local environment and enhance our health and wellbeing. It is also an opportunity to celebrate creativity and commitment. We can’t wait to see the innovative ways our residents transform their gardens and balconies into thriving hubs of biodiversity.”

The Ealing Biodiversity Awards for Gardens and Green Spaces 2025 is more than just a competition; it is a call to action for residents to take an active role in enhancing the borough’s natural environment. By participating, residents can contribute to a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful Ealing while also having the chance to win cash prizes. The competition is a testament to the power of community action and a celebration of creativity and commitment to environmental stewardship.
