Greener spotlight for iconic Broadway Theatre

The funding marks the first step in a larger project aimed at transforming the theatre’s lighting systems to environmentally friendly LEDs by 2030.

The iconic Broadway Theatre in Catford is set to shine brighter and greener as it embarks on an ambitious lighting upgrade, thanks to a £19,425 grant from the Theatres Trust’s Theatres Improvement Scheme, in partnership with the Wolfson Foundation. The funding marks the first step in a larger project aimed at transforming the theatre’s lighting systems to environmentally friendly LEDs by 2030.

“Theatres Trust is delighted to support Broadway Theatre Catford, a theatre with a rich cultural heritage and important community role, with this vital project that will make a big impact in its drive to be more sustainable.”

This upgrade will replace the existing Tungsten Halogen lighting with sustainable LED technology, significantly reducing the theatre’s environmental footprint. The initiative aligns with the borough’s carbon neutrality goals and promises to make the venue more energy-efficient, with lower running costs allowing for expanded community programming.
Cllr Edison Huynh, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling it a win-win for both the environment and the local community. “This funding is great news for Broadway and even better news for the community. Upgrading the theatre’s lighting system is hugely important in helping us reduce our environmental impact and reach our carbon-neutral goals as a borough. It will hopefully also cut running costs, meaning we can support even more community programming and ensure the theatre remains a place that offers our residents access to arts and culture on their doorsteps,” he said.
The Theatres Trust, an organisation dedicated to preserving and improving theatres across the UK, praised the Broadway Theatre’s efforts.

Joshua McTaggart, Director of the Theatres Trust, highlighted the dual benefits of sustainability and community pride. “Theatres Trust is delighted to be able to support Broadway Theatre Catford, a theatre with a rich cultural heritage and important community role, with this vital project that will make a big impact in its drive to be more sustainable,” McTaggart stated.
With this funding secured, Broadway Theatre continues its legacy as a cultural hub while stepping boldly into a greener, more sustainable future.
