The Royal Borough of Greenwich marked National Apprenticeship Week (10–16 February) by hosting its second Apprenticeship Summit at Woolwich Works on 11 February. The event, building on last year’s success, highlighted the benefits of apprenticeships for individuals and businesses.
Organized with London South East Colleges, the University of Greenwich, and Visit Greenwich, the summit showcased local apprenticeship opportunities. It attracted 350 Year 12 and 13 students from nine Greenwich schools and over 400 aspiring apprentices who met with employers like Peabody, the Department for Work and Pensions, The Army, and Oxleas NHS Trust.
A key part of the event was a roundtable discussion chaired by Dr. Sam Parrett CBE, Group CEO of London South East Colleges. Representatives from industry, education, and local government discussed key issues such as policy, funding, youth employment, and skills development.
Key priorities included:
- Increasing the number of young apprentices and supporting the Youth Guarantee for 18- to 21-year-olds.
- Developing workshops for the Local London Youth Trailblazer pilot.
- Launching a local campaign to recruit more young apprentices.
- Creating clear pathways from T Levels to apprenticeships.
- Strengthening ties with the Voluntary and Community Sector to help vulnerable young people.
- Providing guidance for refugees and asylum seekers to access training and apprenticeships.
- Supporting the new Growth and Skills Levy and a local post-16 skills plan.
Cllr Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Business, Skills, and Greenwich Supports, praised the event’s success. “It was fantastic to hear inspiring stories from apprentices and see young people engaging with employers and training providers. We are committed to increasing apprenticeships and supporting young people in their career paths.
