The new action follows the success of a similar order at Cordell House, where ASB offenses plummeted by an astonishing 98%.
In a bold move to tackle crime and anti-social behavior (ASB), Haringey Council and Haringey Police have jointly secured a closure order for Rothbury Walk Estate — marking a rare legal step that covers an entire housing block.
The sweeping order, effective from 16th April, prohibits individuals associated with serious nuisance or criminal activities from accessing communal spaces, including stairwells. Those found in violation without legitimate reasons are now being arrested on the spot.
This action follows the success of a similar order at Cordell House, where ASB offenses plummeted by an astonishing 98%. Authorities are hopeful that Rothbury Walk Estate will witness the same dramatic improvement.
“Everyone deserves to feel secure in their home,” said Councillor Sarah Williams, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning. “We are committed to firm action against crime and anti-social behaviour.”
Inspector Thomas Hassan of the Northumberland Park Safer Neighbourhoods Team praised the strong partnership with local councillors and residents: “This closure order gives us the powers to remove individuals intent on causing harm. The courage of the Rothbury community in standing together has been inspiring.”
A recent survey revealed the urgency of intervention:
72% of residents witnessed drug use in their blocks.
64% reported finding drug supplies abandoned in communal areas.
Only 23% said they felt safe in their homes.
Police, council teams, and residents worked together to push for the unprecedented full-block closure, setting a new standard for reclaiming public spaces.
Officials vow to continue monitoring the estate closely to ensure lasting safety and are encouraging residents to keep reporting concerns
