Havering Council Joins Forces with Volunteers for Romford Town Centre Spring Clean

Refreshments were provided for the hard-working volunteers by Marlborough Highways, the Council’s highways repair and improvement partner. Additional support also came from Romford BID, who helped coordinate the day’s activities

Havering Council teamed up with the Romford Town Wombles and local volunteers for a major clean-up event in support of the Council’s flagship Where We Live campaign and Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean.

Armed with litter pickers, bags, and spades, dozens of enthusiastic volunteers fanned out across Romford town centre to collect discarded rubbish and spruce up the area. Over 50 bags of litter were collected by the end of the day, marking a significant contribution to keeping the borough clean and welcoming.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ray Morgon, Deputy Leader Councillor Gillian Ford, cabinet members, and ward councillors from across Havering joined the efforts. Volunteers were split into three teams, each tackling a different part of the town centre to maximise their impact.

“There was a real community spirit and everyone got stuck in to help tidy up the town centre and the areas around it,” said Councillor Ray Morgon. “As part of our Where We Live campaign, we want to encourage residents to take pride in where they live, work, and go to school. Everyone out there on Saturday definitely showed this spirit, and I applaud their enthusiasm and hard work.”

Refreshments were provided for the hard-working volunteers by Marlborough Highways, the Council’s highways repair and improvement partner. Additional support also came from Romford BID, who helped coordinate the day’s activities.

Despite the Council’s regular street cleaning and efforts to tackle fly-tipping, the event highlighted the ongoing issue of littering by some individuals. Councillor Morgon added: “We can all play a part in helping to keep where we live clean, tidy, green, and a great place to be.”
Rob Enifer from the Romford Town Wombles also praised the event’s success, saying: “On behalf of the Romford Town Wombles, we were delighted to see so many join our Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean’ event. The day was a great success and our volunteers showed fantastic community spirit, helping to improve the environment in our town.”

The Romford Town Wombles continue to hold regular monthly clean-up events and encourage anyone interested in making a difference to get involved.
