Havering Raises Flag to Launch Armed Forces Week Celebrations

Havering officially marked the start of Armed Forces Week with a flag-raising ceremony outside the Town Hall in Romford on Monday, 23 June 2025.

The Mayor of Havering, Councillor Sue Ospreay, led the event, raising the Armed Forces flag in tribute to the dedication and service of the UK’s military personnel. The annual celebration recognises the contribution of current troops, veterans, cadets, and service families.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor said:”It is an honour to raise the Armed Forces flag in dedication to His Majesty’s Armed Forces. From serving personnel to veterans and families, the sacrifice and courage of our Armed Forces should never be forgotten. Havering’s support remains as strong as ever.”

Events will culminate on Armed Forces Day, Saturday 28 June, with a parade through Romford, starting at 10.30am from South Street (junction with Arcade Place) and concluding at the Town Hall. The parade will include serving troops, veterans, cadets, and service families.

As part of this year’s celebrations, Havering Council and NHS North East London ICB will sign the Armed Forces Covenant at approximately 11.15am outside the Town Hall. The Covenant reaffirms a commitment that no member of the Armed Forces community should face disadvantage due to their service, with special recognition given to those injured or bereaved in duty.

This year’s Armed Forces Day Parade is supported by Elm Site Services.
Michael Steel, Director of Elm Site Services, said: “We are proud to support Havering’s Armed Forces Day Parade. It’s a meaningful way to honour those who have served our country selflessly. We look forward to a memorable event.”

Armed Forces Week offers an opportunity for the public to show appreciation for the service and sacrifice of the military community across the UK and the Commonwealth.
