High Street North Set for Upgrade

High Street North set for major resurfacing as Newham Council has secures an additional £213,000 in grant funding from the Department for Transport (DfT)

Newham Council has secured an additional £213,000 in grant funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) for the 2024-25 financial year, allowing essential resurfacing work to be carried out on High Street North, East Ham. This follows a similar grant received last year, which was used to improve High Street South.

The new funding will cover a 340-metre stretch of High Street North, between Ron Leighton Way and Plashet Grove, an area that forms the heart of East Ham Town Centre. Home to East Ham tube station and serving eight bus routes, this busy thoroughfare is a vital hub for local residents, businesses, and commuters. The resurfacing project aims to enhance both the safety and aesthetic appeal of the area, ensuring smoother journeys for all road users.

Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Statutory Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, Sustainable Transport, Children’s Services, and Education, welcomed the funding boost:

“We are delighted to receive this additional £213,000 from the Department for Transport, which will enable us to carry out essential resurfacing works on High Street North, East Ham. This key stretch of road, which serves East Ham’s town centre and vital transport links, will benefit from a smoother, stronger surface that enhances both safety and the overall look of the area. Our commitment to improving Newham’s infrastructure continues, and we’re proud to make East Ham’s roads safer and more accessible for residents, visitors and businesses alike.”

Scheduled for the latter part of the financial year, the resurfacing work will not only improve the overall road quality but also strengthen key stress points, particularly at junctions and bus stops. The improvements will contribute to safer and more efficient transport links, reinforcing the council’s commitment to modernising Newham’s infrastructure.

The upgrade to High Street North follows previous road improvements across the borough, demonstrating the council’s dedication to maintaining and enhancing key transport routes. With ongoing investment in road safety and urban development, Newham Council continues to ensure that local communities benefit from improved infrastructure and better connectivity.

The project is set to minimise disruption to residents and businesses, with details of construction schedules and traffic management plans to be shared in due course. Commuters and local businesses can expect a more resilient and reliable road surface, making daily travel smoother and safer for all.

Resurfacing project will cover a 340-metre stretch of High Street North, between Ron Leighton Way and Plashet Grove, an area that forms the heart of East Ham Town Centre.

With this latest funding, Newham Council reaffirms its long-term vision for a well-maintained, accessible, and future-proofed transport network, ensuring the borough remains a great place to live, work, and visit.
