Hillingdon Expands GLL Partnership

Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre, West Drayton, construction progress summer 2024, July

Hillingdon Council extends partnership with Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) to deliver top-tier sports and wellbeing services

Hillingdon Council has confirmed that the soon-to-open Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre in West Drayton will be managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), a trusted partner already overseeing four other sports facilities in the borough. The appointment marks a significant milestone for the project, ensuring a consistent experience and pricing structure across all council-owned leisure centres.

Under the new agreement, GLL will operate the centre in partnership with the council until at least 2035. This long-term collaboration guarantees a unified approach to managing all public swimming pools and sports complexes in Hillingdon. Currently, GLL manages Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Centre, Highgrove Pool and Fitness Centre, Botwell Green Sports and Leisure Centre, and Queensmead Sports Centre.

Due to open its doors this autumn, the Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre promises to bring a cutting-edge sports and fitness experience to residents in West Drayton and surrounding areas. The centre will boast a 25-metre swimming pool, a dedicated teaching pool, splash pad with a flume, and a health and fitness suite featuring two aerobic studios. Additionally, the facility will offer a soft play area, climbing wall, sports hall with four badminton courts, rooftop 3G football pitch, and a welcoming café space.
While mechanical and engineering works are being finalised, the next phase of the project will focus on outfitting visitor areas. GLL will be responsible for installing high-quality equipment in the gym, aerobics studios, and sports hall to ensure the centre is ready to serve the community from day one.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Cabinet Member for Community and Environment at Hillingdon Council, expressed his enthusiasm about the appointment. “We’re delighted to be continuing our relationship with GLL and to benefit from their considerable experience in operating leisure centres,” he said. “Having a single operator means residents will see consistent pricing and services across all five of our facilities, which supports our commitment to value for money.”

“We’re looking forward to seeing the centre open later this year and giving residents in Yiewsley and West Drayton access to high quality facilities to help improve their health and wellbeing, while supporting one of our five commitments to residents to create thriving healthy households.”

He added: “We’re especially excited about the opportunities this new centre will offer to residents in Yiewsley and West Drayton. It’s a cornerstone of our promise to create thriving, healthy households, and I’m confident it will become a vital asset to the community.”

Keely Shelton, GLL’s Partnership Manager for Hillingdon, shared a similar sense of pride in expanding their partnership with the council. “We are thrilled to add the Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre to our portfolio in Hillingdon,” she said. “As a charitable social enterprise with over three decades of experience in managing world-class facilities, we’re committed to making a meaningful impact on community health and wellbeing.”
Shelton highlighted GLL’s broader mission to invest in local communities. “Our operational model ensures that profits are reinvested locally, whether it’s through inclusive fitness programmes or the GLL Sport Foundation, which supports budding athletes. We look forward to nurturing the borough’s future sporting talent and offering every resident the opportunity to get active, stay fit, and feel inspired.”

The new facility is one of the council’s key capital investments, aiming to deliver long-term health, social, and economic benefits for residents. With its comprehensive suite of modern amenities, inclusive programming, and strategic operator partnership, the Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre is set to become a landmark destination for health and wellbeing in Hillingdon.
As anticipation builds for the official opening later this year, residents can expect a high-quality, accessible, and community-focused leisure offering right on their doorstep—one that reflects Hillingdon’s ongoing commitment to investing in the wellbeing of all who call the borough home.
