Hounslow’s £9m Waste Fleet Overhaul

The new fleet will run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel, a renewable energy source that cuts emissions by more than 85% compared to traditional diesel, in line with Hounslow’s Climate Emergency Plan

Hounslow Council is set to invest £9 million in a new fleet of refuse collection vehicles, marking a significant step towards a greener and more efficient waste and recycling service for the borough.

The decision to replace the ageing diesel-powered fleet aligns with the Council’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. The new fleet will run on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel, a renewable energy source that cuts emissions by more than 85% compared to traditional diesel, in line with Hounslow’s Climate Emergency Plan.
“This decision will benefit every resident in the borough we provide a household waste collection service to,” said Councillor Shivraj Grewal, lead member for Infrastructure, Recycling and Transformation at Hounslow Council. “A new and improved fleet of vehicles will not only improve collections but will also have a positive impact on the environment.”
The investment will see the procurement of 50 new frontline vehicles between 2025 and 2028, ensuring greater reliability, efficiency, and consistency in waste collection services. The modernised fleet will also be designed to accommodate additional recyclables, supporting the borough’s sustainability goals and reducing landfill waste.

The procurement process is already underway, with the first vehicles expected to be delivered within the next three years. The transition to HVO-powered refuse trucks reflects Hounslow’s broader environmental ambitions, demonstrating a commitment to long-term carbon reduction and cleaner air for residents.

“This investment is another bold and tangible step that we are taking to tackle the climate emergency and create a healthier, cleaner, and greener Hounslow now and for many generations to come,” Cllr Grewal added.
The new fleet forms part of Hounslow’s ongoing efforts to modernise services and build a more sustainable future for the community.
