Islington Honours Its Local Heroes

Among the honoured recipients were a lifelong volunteer, a dedicated caretaker of more than 30 years, and a young fire cadet, all of whom have gone above and beyond in their efforts to support Islington’s residents.

Islington’s local heroes have been celebrated for their outstanding contributions to the community at a special awards ceremony hosted by the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Anjna Khurana. The event recognised individuals who have made a significant impact in the borough, helping to create a more equal and supportive community.
Among the honoured recipients were a lifelong volunteer, a dedicated caretaker of more than 30 years, and a young fire cadet, all of whom have gone above and beyond in their efforts to support Islington’s residents. The ceremony included the prestigious Mayor’s Civic Awards and the Ben Kinsella Award, which acknowledges exceptional young people making a difference in the borough. For the first time, the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Service to Islington was also presented to an individual whose work aligns with the Mayor’s priorities during their term.
The Mayor’s Civic Awards for 2025 were presented to four recipients. Michelle Akpata was recognised for her dedication to volunteering since 2011, which has included supporting The Garden Classroom, renovating Robert Blair Primary School, and serving as a Library Reading Champion. Her contributions extend to volunteering at Moorfields Eye Hospital and assisting blind and partially sighted athletes as a guide runner.
Seyda Ozcan was honoured for her work with the Mildmay Community Partnership, where she played a key role in supporting the community co-op and food bank, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Her leadership has helped create a welcoming space at the Mildmay Community Centre and has been instrumental in organising community events.

“In times of adversity, it is our unsung heroes who truly embody the values of hope, solidarity, and resilience – inspiring us all. Congratulations to the award winners and nominees for their outstanding contributions.”
-Anjna Khurana, Mayor of Islington

The late George Brade was posthumously recognised for his lasting contributions to Islington. As a caretaker at Whittington Park Community Centre for over three decades, he was a beloved figure in the community. His passion for steel pan music saw him teach children and perform at local events, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy.

The Parent Empowerment Champions (PECs), a dedicated group of 14 individuals, received an award for their work in supporting families in Islington and Camden. Through workshops, events, panels, and the “United Against Violence” podcast, they have reached more than 2,000 parents, tackling issues such as online safety and youth violence.
The Ben Kinsella Award, which honours outstanding young people under 18, was awarded to Sidney Fossey. Sidney’s commitment as a Fire Cadet has seen him lead Fire Safety Workshops for Year 7 pupils and assist with cadet recruitment. His involvement with the Tufnell Park Community Plant Nursery has further strengthened the borough’s community spaces.
A new honour, the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Service to Islington, was presented to Sue Brownson. Sue has spent over 40 years supporting Deaf and special needs children in the borough. Her work at Laycock Primary School has fostered an inclusive and nurturing environment where Deaf pupils can thrive.

Speaking at the event, Mayor of Islington, Cllr Anjna Khurana, expressed her admiration for the award winners, stating: “Islington is a borough built on unity, and I am proud to highlight the incredible work being done by our diverse communities. In times of adversity, it is our unsung heroes who truly embody the values of hope, solidarity, and resilience – inspiring us all. Congratulations to the award winners and nominees for their outstanding contributions to our amazing borough.”
The awards ceremony was made possible through the support of its primary sponsor, the Mears Group, along with additional sponsorship from Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), London Metropolitan University, and AD Construction Group. Each winner was presented with a certificate and an award by the Mayor. Shortlisted nominees for the Ben Kinsella Award also received an exclusive No More Red football shirt, courtesy of adidas and Arsenal.

The evening was hosted by comedian and television presenter Clive Anderson, who helped celebrate the achievements of Islington’s local heroes in a night dedicated to honouring community spirit and service.
