Jon Rowney named Camden chief executive

Camden Council has confirmed the appointment of Jon Rowney as its next Chief Executive, following a full Council vote on Thursday, 22 May 2025. He will step into the role this July, succeeding current Chief Executive Jenny Rowlands.

Mr Rowney, who has been with Camden Council since 2015, is currently serving as Executive Director of Corporate Services. His tenure has been marked by strategic financial leadership and a steadfast commitment to public service values. His promotion to Chief Executive comes after a rigorous selection process led by council members.

Councillor Richard Olszewski, Leader of Camden Council, praised the appointment, saying: “We were searching for a leader who embodies our values—someone visionary, compassionate, and courageous. Jon has consistently demonstrated those qualities. He has shown a deep understanding of Camden’s unique challenges and opportunities, and I’m proud to see him take on this new leadership role.”

During his time at Camden, Rowney has overseen the borough’s financial strategy, ensuring that limited public resources are directed towards the areas of greatest need. He has also been a driving force behind efforts to make Camden a more inclusive and representative organisation, serving as a senior sponsor for diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Rowney is also a Trustee of Refuge, a charity that supports women and children fleeing domestic abuse. He has led the Council’s mission to end violence and abuse against women and girls, a cause that colleagues say he approaches with commitment and resolve.

In acknowledging the transition, Councillor Olszewski also paid tribute to outgoing Chief Executive Jenny Rowlands. “Jenny has left a lasting legacy. Her leadership over the past six years has been transformative, and I am incredibly grateful for her vision, energy, and dedication. She has laid strong foundations for Camden’s future.”

As Jon Rowney prepares to take the top post, expectations are high for continued innovation, financial stewardship, and inclusive governance at the heart of one of London’s most dynamic boroughs.
