Kingston’s Ancient Market Set for a Revamp

A leading UK market operator, Between The Bridges  has been appointed as the new operator for Kingston Ancient Market.

Kingston Council has appointed Between The Bridges as the new operator for Kingston Ancient Market, ushering in a new era for the historic town centre space from 1 April 2025.

A leading UK market operator, Between The Bridges has a strong track record of managing popular street markets and events across London, including Southbank’s Between The Bridges market, Clapham’s Venn Street Market, and Winterville. Their expertise in hospitality, site management, and creative placemaking is expected to bring fresh energy to Kingston’s much-loved market.

This appointment marks a significant shift in the way Kingston Ancient Market will be managed. Between The Bridges will take full responsibility for all activity within the space, including the street trading market and Ancient Market House. The move is part of the council’s wider vision to revitalise the market, support local businesses, enhance the cultural offering, and attract more visitors to the town centre.

A Market Shaped by Community Vision

The decision follows extensive local engagement on the future of Kingston’s Ancient Market. On 21 November 2024, the Council’s Corporate & Resources Committee approved the appointment after a competitive bidding process.

The new management model aligns with key council priorities—preserving Kingston’s rich heritage, fostering economic growth, creating a fairer society, and tackling climate change challenges.

“Bringing all of Kingston Ancient Market’s spaces under one operating model presents an exciting opportunity to boost economic development, attract more footfall to local businesses, and transform this key town centre space.”

Alison Holt, Deputy Leader of the Council

Deputy Leader of Kingston Council and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Leisure, Alison Holt, said:

“The Ancient Market Place has been the historic heart of Kingston town centre since the 12th century. Through conversations with our communities, we’ve heard how deeply valued it is.

“We are committed to supporting local businesses and ensuring the market thrives. Bringing all of Kingston Ancient Market’s spaces under one operating model presents an exciting opportunity to boost economic development, attract more footfall to local businesses, and transform this key town centre space.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Kingston First for their stewardship and management of Kingston’s street market over the past decade. Their team has worked tirelessly to make Kingston a great place to live, work, and visit, and we look forward to continuing our partnership on town centre projects.”

A Fresh Look for an Iconic Space

The new operator, Between The Bridges, has ambitious plans to modernise and rejuvenate Kingston Ancient Market while staying true to its heritage. Their approach focuses on thoughtful design, improved facilities, and a stronger sense of place.

Managing Director Marcus Weedon outlined their vision:

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with Kingston Council to create a vibrant future for Kingston Ancient Market—one that respects its deep-rooted history while embracing new possibilities.

“Our plans include modernising permanent kiosks and stalls, enhancing communal seating areas, refurbishing Ancient Market House, and ensuring that every corner of the market reflects Kingston’s unique character.

“Kingston Market has long been a hub of community life, and we look forward to working closely with traders and local people to build on its traditions while bringing new energy and opportunities to this special space.”

With a blend of heritage, commerce, and creativity, the new vision for Kingston Ancient Market aims to cement its status as a bustling, must-visit destination for residents and visitors alike.
