Lambeth Council has announced plans to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network and will take over management of the existing infrastructure from Monday, 17 March.
The borough currently has over 400 EV charging points, with an additional 70 fast or rapid points and 264 lamppost chargers set to be installed this year.
From Monday, the council will transfer the operation of remaining lamp column chargers to its in-house system.
Deputy council leader Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, cabinet member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, called it an exciting step as the council introduces an innovative “own and operate” model — one of the first of its kind in the UK.

“This gives the council control over network growth without disrupting residents and businesses,” said Cllr Chowdhury. “We can install chargers where they’re most needed, ensure fair and transparent pricing, and respond quickly to issues, with revenue reinvested into improving the service.”
Current EV users with Ubitricity chargers will still be able to charge their vehicles but will need to switch to the ClenergyEV app.
Cllr Chowdhury added that while Lambeth supports EV adoption, reducing overall vehicle use remains key to addressing the climate crisis. “We want to help those who rely on vehicles to travel more sustainably with cleaner, more convenient charging options,” she said.
