Lambeth Sanctuary Seekers Develop Digital Guide for Asylum Arrivals in the UK
In a significant effort to support those fleeing conflict and persecution, Lambeth Council’s Adult Learning Service has collaborated with local sanctuary seekers to create a digital guide aimed at helping new arrivals navigate life in the United Kingdom.
The publication, titled “Welcome to Lambeth: A Guide for Individuals Seeking Asylum,” was developed through a week-long training programme involving 11 individuals who have sought sanctuary and are now residing in the borough. The initiative is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting refugees and asylum seekers as a designated Borough of Sanctuary.
The training, held at the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre at the Kia Oval, was delivered in partnership with the High Trees Community Association. It equipped participants with digital design skills using the Canva platform and enabled them to document their lived experiences and key insights about life in the UK. This is the first adult education programme hosted at the venue, which is more commonly used by local primary schools.
The guide, launched on 16 June to mark the beginning of World Refugee Week, contains practical advice for new arrivals, including how to enrol children in school, access free NHS therapy services, and the importance of learning English to increase opportunity and integration.
The resource replaces a previous council-produced version and will now serve as the primary guide distributed by Lambeth’s Sanctuary Services to individuals housed in local refugee hotels and other accommodation settings.
In a joint statement, the team behind the guide expressed gratitude and a sense of purpose:
“Thank you to Lambeth for all your support. Thank you for planting this tree and encouraging it to grow. We are ambitious to become pillars of the community. Together, we can not only make dreams come true, but make miracles happen.”
Councillor Nanda Manley-Browne, Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities, welcomed the launch by saying “This guide is a powerful example of our commitment to action, not just awareness. As the child of immigrants myself, I understand the importance of feeling seen, safe, and informed. This project ensures that new arrivals are not only welcomed but also empowered.”
Jon Surtees, Head of Community, Public Affairs and Projects at Surrey County Cricket Club, expressed support for the initiative and enthusiasm for future collaborations:
“We’re proud to partner with Lambeth on such meaningful work. We hope this guide provides comfort and clarity to those starting their journey here.”
The initiative reflects Lambeth’s ongoing dedication to creating a welcoming, informed, and inclusive environment for all individuals seeking refuge in the UK.
