Mary’s Turns 60 with Stylish Revamp

Mary’s, a beloved fixture on Camberwell Road since 1965, has undergone a major heritage-inspired transformation as part of Southwark Council’s Walworth Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) programme

One of Southwark’s most iconic cafés has been given a fresh lease of life just in time for its 60th anniversary. Mary’s, a beloved fixture on Camberwell Road since 1965, has undergone a major heritage-inspired transformation as part of Southwark Council’s Walworth Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) programme.

Longstanding family-run café Mary’s is not just a local treasure, it’s also a symbol of Southwark’s rich, community-rooted identity. Operated by the Mustafa family since it first opened, the café is now run by Huseyin, who joined the business full-time in 1980, and his wife Hatice. Together, they’ve watched generations of residents pass through its doors, and now, thanks to the borough’s investment, they’re welcoming in a new era.

The makeover was carried out with the support of Historic England and specialist heritage architects, Purcell. Starting in September 2024 and completed by January 2025, the extensive works included a new roof, windows, brickwork restoration, improved drainage, and a completely rebuilt shopfront designed to reflect a traditional, eye-catching style reminiscent of the Victorian era.

“It’s been a revelation,” said Huseyin. “The response has been amazing. People stop to take pictures, even those who don’t know us. The design is beautiful – we’ve been really impressed with the workmanship and the attention to detail.”

The total cost of the project came to around £250,000, funded in part by Southwark Council’s High Streets Fund and with a 40 per cent grant from Historic England.

The Walworth Heritage Action Zone was launched in 2017 as the first of its kind in inner London. It aims to breathe new life into Southwark’s historic high streets, preserving character while enhancing local business potential and community pride.

Councillor Martin Seaton, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Business and Town Centres, said: “Mary’s is the heartbeat of Camberwell Road – a warm, welcoming space that’s part of the soul of this community. This renovation isn’t just about bricks and mortar, it’s about restoring pride and creating a future for our historic businesses.”

The restoration of Mary’s is a powerful example of how heritage and regeneration can go hand in hand, giving small businesses like Mary’s the platform to thrive for another 60 years.
