Mayor announces new £1m sports investment

The initiative is aimed at reducing youth violence through the Violence Reduction Unit, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to create a safer city for young people

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has unveiled a £1 million investment in sports and physical activities aimed at reducing youth violence through the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to create a safer city for young people. This initiative, the first of its kind in England and Wales, will fund up to 20 community-led projects across London over the next year, targeting nearly 2,000 young people who are most at risk and underrepresented in sports.

Since its inception, the VRU has been at the forefront of delivering over 400,000 diversionary activities for young people. These efforts have yielded tangible results, with a 31 per cent reduction in homicides, a 28 per cent drop in hospital admissions for under-25s due to assault with a sharp object, and a 12 per cent reduction in robbery. Notably, the past year saw the lowest number of homicides of under-25s in over two decades. Despite these encouraging statistics, Mayor Khan remains resolute in his commitment to reducing violence further through targeted interventions and partnerships.

The funding will support a variety of sports interventions, with a strong emphasis on providing safe spaces and activities during school holidays. Research indicates that young people are more vulnerable to exploitation and violence during these periods. By offering sports and physical activities, the VRU aims to keep young people engaged and safe, while also promoting their physical and mental health. The initiative will also support 1,000 young people transitioning from primary to secondary school, providing mentorship and sports sessions to those at risk of exclusion. Additionally, the investment will create sports internships in major sport sector organisations, building on existing partnerships with entities such as the Lawn Tennis Association, GB Snowsport, and Formula E.

Mayor Khan and VRU Director Lib Peck recently visited a youth club in Westminster, which offers a range of activities including multi-sport, music production, wellbeing sessions, and healthy cooking. During the visit, they participated in a cooking session with chef and influencer Nathaniel ‘Natty’ Mortley, who has turned his life around after spending time in prison. Mortley, who is passionate about providing positive opportunities for young people, highlighted the importance of access to such activities in helping young people stay on the right path.

Other VRU-funded activities can be found on the Local Village Network app and website, which lists thousands of live youth services, activities, and job opportunities. The Mayor’s investment in the VRU since 2023 has already provided activities for over 10,000 young people through sports sessions, mentoring, and internship programmes.

Mayor Khan said, “My top priority is to be tough on violence and its complex causes to build a safer London. Investing in prevention and positive opportunities for young people is crucial, alongside record investment in policing. The VRU’s £1 million investment will deliver 250,000 positive opportunities for young people and access to youth clubs and hubs.”
Lib Peck added, “Sport and physical activity are vital for young people, offering skill development and positive role models. We’re funding activities during holidays when young people are most at risk. Prevention is key to tackling violence, and we’re committed to keeping young people safe through partnerships across London.”

Chef Nathaniel ‘Natty’ Mortley said, “Access to positive opportunities and role models can be life-changing. The VRU’s investment is helping level the playing field for young people.” Programme Manager Marcus Leon of the Avenues Youth Project said, “Funding from the VRU allows us to provide invaluable experiences and sports coaching, ensuring equal opportunities for children and young people regardless of their background.”
Young user Kyanne Auguste-Walker described the youth club as a “second family” and a “safe space.” London Sport CEO Emily Robinson said, “Sport can change lives, and we’re proud to support the VRU in providing safe spaces and mentorship for young Londoners, particularly those at risk of violence.”

The VRU’s approach to tackling violence is multifaceted, encompassing interventions to reduce school exclusions and keep young people safe both in and out of school. Funding youth work and providing access to positive opportunities are integral to this strategy. The latest investment in sports and physical activities is a testament to the VRU’s commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for young people in London.
As the VRU continues to lead on prevention and early intervention, the £1 million investment in sports and physical activities represents a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to reduce youth violence. By providing young people with positive opportunities and access to youth clubs and community hubs, the VRU is not only addressing the immediate risks but also laying the groundwork for a safer and more resilient future for all Londoners.
