New homes bring hope to Greenwich families

The Greenwich Builds programme represents a major investment in social housing, ensuring that vulnerable families, key workers, and those on lower incomes have access to secure and affordable homes.

Royal Greenwich is making significant strides in addressing the borough’s housing needs, with hundreds of new council homes now completed and many more under construction as part of the ambitious Greenwich Builds programme. This initiative aims to provide high-quality, sustainable homes for local residents, ensuring that those on the housing register have access to secure and affordable accommodation.

The housing crisis remains one of the most pressing issues in London, with thousands of people in need of stable housing. Greenwich Council has committed to tackling this challenge head-on, with the Greenwich Builds programme forming a key part of its long-term strategy. The initiative not only seeks to provide new homes but also to improve the quality of life for residents, ensuring that all council-owned properties meet modern living standards.

Commitment to Affordable Housing

Cabinet Member for Planning, Estate Renewal and Development, Cllr Majid Rahman, highlighted the progress being made: “These fantastic homes exemplify what we are achieving with our Greenwich Builds programme—superbly designed, sustainable homes targeted to meet the urgent needs of people on our housing register. We are committed to creating 1,750 council homes across the borough, and with hundreds either complete or underway, we are making fantastic progress towards meeting this goal.”

The Greenwich Builds programme represents a major investment in social housing, ensuring that vulnerable families, key workers, and those on lower incomes have access to secure and affordable homes. By focusing on long-term solutions, the council is working to reduce homelessness and housing insecurity across the borough.

Providing Safe and Secure Homes

The initiative aligns with the council’s broader commitment to ensuring residents have access to safe and secure housing. Cabinet Member for Housing Management, Neighbourhoods and Homelessness, Cllr Pat Slattery, reinforced this mission, stating: “It is Our Greenwich mission to make sure that people in Royal Greenwich have access to a safe and secure home that meets their needs. We are delivering on that commitment with hundreds of new council homes now completed, hundreds more under construction, and a huge programme of repairs to our existing housing stock now underway, providing the solid foundation people need to build and enjoy their lives.”

Housing security is fundamental to social stability, and the council is ensuring that homes are not only available but also maintained to high standards. A comprehensive repairs and maintenance programme is in place to upgrade older properties, making sure that existing council tenants also benefit from improved living conditions.

Sustainability at the Heart of the Programme

With sustainability at the core of Greenwich Builds, the newly developed homes are designed to meet high environmental standards. Energy efficiency is a key consideration, with homes built using modern construction techniques that reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs for residents. Features such as improved insulation, energy-efficient heating systems, and environmentally friendly materials contribute to the council’s wider climate action goals.

By prioritising sustainability, the council is not only addressing the housing crisis but also ensuring that the borough remains a leader in eco-friendly urban development. The new council homes serve as a model for future housing projects, demonstrating how social housing can be both affordable and environmentally responsible.

A Vision for the Future

As the borough continues to invest in its housing stock, residents can look forward to a future where high-quality, affordable homes are more widely available. The Greenwich Builds programme is part of a broader strategy to create a thriving, inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to live in a safe and secure environment.

The council is working closely with local communities to ensure that housing developments meet the needs of residents. Public consultations, feedback sessions, and ongoing engagement with tenants are integral to the success of the programme. By involving residents in the decision-making process, the council aims to create a sense of ownership and pride in these new homes.

Looking ahead, Greenwich Council remains committed to delivering its target of 1,750 new council homes. With each completed development, the borough moves one step closer to its goal of providing stable housing for all. The Greenwich Builds programme is a testament to what can be achieved when local authorities prioritise the needs of their communities, creating lasting change that benefits generations to come.
