A total of 33 new homes have been completed across two sites in Bethnal Green, delivered by Tower Hamlets Council
Dozens of families are starting a new chapter in Bethnal Green as Tower Hamlets Council completes two new affordable housing developments, delivering 33 high-quality homes in a part of the borough where demand for secure and accessible housing remains high.
The homes, spread across two neighbouring sites at 10 and 30 Wickford Street, have been built as part of the council’s ambitious plans to tackle the borough’s housing shortage and to support residents most in need — especially families and disabled residents living in overcrowded or unsuitable accommodation.
The first site was demolished in January 2023 and transformed into 18 new homes by August 2024. These are now fully occupied, with families enjoying modern, energy-efficient housing and improved living conditions.
The second site was completed in March 2025, adding a further 15 homes along with new office and community spaces to support local services. These homes are currently being advertised through the council’s Choice Based Lettings scheme, and the new tenants are expected to move in by the end of April.

Fourteen of the 33 homes have been purpose-built as family-sized properties, while four are fully wheelchair-accessible units, delivered through Project 120 — a targeted council initiative that ensures new housing includes adapted homes for disabled residents. The programme brings together developers, occupational therapists and council housing teams to design and build properties with features such as hoists, wider doorways, step-free access, and adapted bathrooms, tailored to individual needs.
Among the early residents is Esme, who moved into an accessible home with her children in August 2024. She says the move has had a transformational impact on her family’s health and wellbeing.
“Since moving into my new fully adapted home, my life has significantly improved,” Esme said. “Me and my children are able to enjoy our new environment, and we’ve noticed a difference even in our moods.

“For me, the biggest difference has been that for the first time in four years, I didn’t get seriously sick after my immunotherapy treatment. I could safely isolate in my own home and use my own bathroom, which helped me recover without needing a hospital stay. That meant everything to us.”
Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, praised the development as a clear sign of the council’s commitment to addressing housing need with practical, inclusive solutions.
“I’m delighted that we’ve delivered these new, council-owned affordable homes and community spaces in Bethnal Green,” he said. “Providing new, affordable housing is one of our top priorities — not only to meet demand but also to build stronger communities. It’s wonderful to see families settling into their new homes, and I look forward to even more moving into 30 Wickford Street in the coming weeks.”
