The position of Civic Mayor, steeped in local history, represents one of the borough’s most respected traditions — a symbol of civic pride and community unity.
Princess Bright has officially taken up the role of Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham following a ceremonial mayor-making event at Barking Town Hall. She succeeds Moin Quadri, who served the borough with dedication over the past year.
The position of Civic Mayor, steeped in local history, represents one of the borough’s most respected traditions — a symbol of civic pride and community unity. As Mayor, Bright will champion local causes, engage with residents and businesses, and serve as an ambassador for Barking and Dagenham’s values and diversity.
In her inaugural speech, Bright pledged to be a mayor for all, rooted in compassion, pride, and service. “I believe in the power of community, the importance of tradition, and the need to inspire pride in the place we all call home,” she said. “As Civic Mayor, I am committed to being a voice that uplifts our borough — honouring local heroes, supporting charities, and forging deeper connections with residents, schools, and businesses.”
Born in Homerton Hospital and raised in the borough since 2009, Bright was elected in 2018 at the age of 22. Since then, she has carved out a path of public service, mentoring aspiring professionals, volunteering with youth-focused charities, and supporting tech-based empowerment through her work with Agile Africa. A school governor and community organiser, she is passionate about inclusion, opportunity, and inspiring young people.
Her term as Mayor will focus on supporting two charities close to her heart. One is Ab Phab Youth Club, a local initiative that provides inclusive youth programmes for both disabled and non-disabled young people, empowering them through participation and personal development. The other is Crohn’s & Colitis UK, a national charity supporting people with inflammatory bowel disease — a cause with personal meaning for the Mayor, who was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2011.
“Through this partnership, I aim to raise awareness, advocate for better support, and bring hope to those affected,” she said.
Bright also made clear her intention to blend tradition with fresh energy. “It is not just a responsibility but a privilege to serve as a figurehead for the hopes and values of our community.”
The council extended its sincere thanks to outgoing Mayor Moin Quadri for his service and offered its warmest congratulations to Bright on her appointment. Her mayoral year promises to focus on dignity, inclusivity, and building stronger community bonds.
Residents and groups wishing to invite the Mayor to an event should complete the online form at least 14 days in advance.
