Roehampton Youth Base Recognised at Parliament’s IWD Event

The event, which brought together influential leaders and advocates, focused on the 2025 theme: For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.

The invaluable role of Roehampton Youth Base in providing a safe and empowering space for young women and girls was highlighted at Parliament as part of this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations. The event, which brought together influential leaders and advocates, focused on the 2025 theme: For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment. The theme underscores the urgent need to dismantle systemic barriers and biases that continue to hinder gender equality worldwide.

Located in the heart of the community, Roehampton Youth Base provides essential support to young people aged 10-19, with extended services available for those up to 25 who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The centre is more than just a youth space—it is a sanctuary where young people can thrive, learn, and develop crucial life skills in a secure and inclusive environment.

Empowering Young Women Through Safe Spaces
For many young girls in Roehampton, the Youth Base is a lifeline. The centre offers a wide range of initiatives designed to build confidence, resilience, and independence. These include self-defence classes, mentorship programmes, and confidence-building workshops, all of which are co-designed with young people to ensure they meet their specific needs. By equipping young women with essential skills, the centre empowers them to overcome challenges and seize opportunities for a brighter future.
The impact of Roehampton Youth Base was shared at Parliament by Pat Ingram, a key leader at the centre. Her attendance underscored the meaningful difference the centre has made in countless young lives and the importance of continued investment in youth services.

Recognition from Community Leaders
The work of Roehampton Youth Base has been widely recognised, with local leaders praising its vital role in supporting young people. Kate Stock, Wandsworth Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, expressed her admiration for the centre’s ongoing contributions: “Roehampton Youth Base is a lifeline for so many young people. It provides not just a safe space but real opportunities for personal growth. We are proud to support initiatives like these that make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Pat’s invitation to Parliament is a testament to her dedication and the profound impact of the team at Roehampton Youth Base.”

Fleur Anderson, MP for Putney, also commended the efforts of Pat and the entire team: “International Women’s Day is about celebrating the incredible contributions of women like Pat, who work tirelessly to uplift and support young girls in our community. The work happening at Roehampton Youth Base is vital, and I look forward to seeing even more investment in initiatives that empower women and girls.”

A Platform for Change
Reflecting on her experience at Parliament, Pat Ingram emphasised the importance of youth empowerment and the ongoing fight for gender equality: “It was an incredible honour to share the work we do at Roehampton Youth Base on such a significant platform. Every young girl deserves to feel safe, supported, and empowered to achieve her dreams. International Women’s Day serves as a reminder that while progress has been made, there is still so much more to do.”

International Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder of the need to continue breaking down barriers and prioritising equal opportunities for women. Roehampton Youth Base exemplifies what can be achieved when communities come together to uplift and support young women, providing them with the tools they need to succeed.

Amplifying Young Voices

Wandsworth Council remains dedicated to empowering young people, particularly women and girls. Its Youth Strategy extends beyond providing safe spaces—it ensures that young people have a voice in shaping their own futures and that they are actively involved in decisions affecting their lives.
Youth Mayor Millie Quinn echoed this sentiment: “It’s crucial that young people’s voices are heard and valued in shaping the future of our community, and that’s why I’m dedicated to ensuring their voices are at the heart of everything we do.”

As Roehampton Youth Base continues its mission to uplift and empower young women, its presence at Parliament underscores the broader need for investment in youth services and gender equality initiatives. The centre stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, demonstrating that with the right support, young women can overcome barriers and reach their full potential.
