The initiative, which has begun at the Alton Estate, aims to create cleaner, tidier spaces while making it easier for residents to recycle properly
A major drive to improve recycling rates on housing estates in Wandsworth is underway, with new waste and recycling bins being installed across nine priority locations. The initiative, which has begun at the Alton Estate, aims to create cleaner, tidier spaces while making it easier for residents to recycle properly.
The new bins come with clearer signage detailing what can and cannot be recycled, helping to reduce contamination and ensuring waste is sorted correctly. This is a key part of Wandsworth Council’s wider efforts to improve recycling services and maintain a cleaner borough.

“This is part of our Cleaner Borough plan. We are working to improve recycling services across the whole borough while maintaining the lowest Council Tax in the country.”

Councillor Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment, highlighted the importance of the scheme, noting that housing estates have some of the lowest recycling rates in the borough. “We have listened to resident feedback and are installing these new bins to help people recycle correctly. This is part of our Cleaner Borough plan, and we are working to improve recycling services while continuing to offer the lowest Council Tax in the country,” she said.

Beyond the introduction of new bins, Wandsworth Council is also rolling out a free food waste recycling service and strengthening communication efforts to ensure residents are well informed about proper recycling practices.
Local residents have welcomed the changes. Baris Alis, who lives on the Alton Estate, praised the improvements: “I am very happy with our new bins. They are much easier for us, and it’s so clean. Thank you for everything.”
The full rollout of the new bins across all nine priority estates is expected to be completed by November 2025.
