This significant funding marks a major increase from the £4.75 million allocated in 2023/24, more than doubling the council’s annual budget for road and pavement maintenance.
Wandsworth is set to undergo its most extensive highway maintenance programme yet, with an unprecedented £10.25 million investment in roads and pavements. The initiative, part of the council’s ambitious Decade of Renewal, aims to transform the borough’s infrastructure within a single year, ensuring safer and more accessible streets for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
This significant funding marks a major increase from the £4.75 million allocated in 2023/24, more than doubling the council’s annual budget for road and pavement maintenance. By 2025/26, the borough will see a comprehensive overhaul of its transport network, including resurfacing roads, repairing pavements, repainting road markings, and replacing street signs.
Councillor Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, emphasised the council’s commitment to listening to residents and prioritising essential upgrades. “As a listening council, we hear when you say that improving roads and pavements in Wandsworth is a priority. This record-breaking programme demonstrates our commitment to delivering safer and more accessible streets,” she said.
Rather than increasing costs for taxpayers, the council will finance the project through developer levy contributions, ensuring that essential improvements are made while maintaining value for money.
A key aspect of this initiative is its funding mechanism. Rather than increasing costs for taxpayers, the council will finance the project through developer levy contributions, ensuring that essential improvements are made while maintaining value for money. “By using developer funding, we’re making a significant impact without burdening local residents,” Councillor Yates added.
In addition to large-scale resurfacing and repairs, the council is rolling out its innovative “7 Rings, 7 Days Guarantee,” aimed at improving response times for maintenance requests. Under this new commitment, any reported graffiti, damaged street signs, or hazardous potholes will be addressed within seven days. Residents can report issues via a dedicated phone line, 020 8871 6000, where calls will be answered within seven rings, or by emailing hello@wandsworth.gov.uk.

To minimise disruptions, the council will notify residents in advance about scheduled works and implement measures such as night-time construction where possible. “We understand that roadworks can be inconvenient, and we’re committed to keeping disruption to a minimum while ensuring high-quality improvements,” Councillor Yates reassured.
The comprehensive road and pavement renewal programme underscores Wandsworth’s long-term commitment to enhancing public spaces, fostering community pride, and ensuring the borough remains a safe and welcoming place to live and work. With many roads already scheduled for upgrades, residents can expect noticeable improvements in the months ahead.
